After Update SLES 11 SP2>SP3 no Login for any User possible

Hi there,

after updating one Machine from SP2 to SP3 via Onlineupdate/YAST wagon we have a “little” problem:
Yast wagon shows normal updateprocess, after the Onlineupdate we have restarted the Server.
Everything seems fine, we’ve got the Loginscreen, but - we can’t login any more.

Every User/Admin Access seems to vanished, every combination results in an “Access denied - wrong username/pw”-note.
Searching the web we are apparently the only ones with this problem.
we would be gradeful for any hints…
TIA
Timo

Even ‘root’ cannot login? If you have not tried, please try it.
Otherwise you’ll need to do something like boot to runlevel 1 (type ‘1’ at
Grub before booting) or use a rescue disk to see what shows up in the
/var/log/messages file during these errors. Obviously updating should not
prevent logins, but there are a few ways that it could happen I suppose
(reworked and broken PAM, for example).

Good luck.

anything in syslog (which you might be able to see when looking at the console - VT10, if I recall correctly)?

Do all other services run properly, as far as you can tell from “outside the machine”?

Did you have any special PAM setup before the upgrade?

If everything else fails, try rebooting the machine into maintenance mode, mount the file systems manually and look at the usual files (/etc/passwd, /etc/groups, /etc/pam.d/*, what’s in /var/log/messages,…).
