LVM inactive on startup and reboot

The system is SLES 11 SP1. The LVM volumes are inactive after an IPL. I am able to make them active and successfully mount them. On reboot these volumes are once again inactive. I turned verbose on and reboot. Issued “lvscan” then activated the LVM volumes and issued “lvscan”.

Greetings Harley, thank you for the reply. I do not understand why I may need to do a vgchange. After IPL I do a lvchange to make the lvm volumes active. This works and I am able to mount these lvm volumes. A reboot is done and the devices become inactive again. I try fsck with a backup superblock to fix the lvm volumes. Error are found and I am asked to fix them. I reply “yes” but if I rerun the fsck utility the same problems are found!

Greetings J, thank you for your suggestion. I add the specified parameter on a menu item. I check the boot messages and it did get specified. However, the lvm devices still came up inactive.

sorry about that - I’m not familiar with the System Z environment, maybe there needs to be a different parameter specified? (I looked this up on a SELS12SP1 Intel, where Dracut is used as the boot environment. In it’s sources, I see that “rd_LVM_LV” is specified as deprecated predecessor of “rd.lvm.vg”)

The idea behind my suggestion is that typically, the boot environment only auto-activates those VGs needed for the boot (so most importantly the VG where your root LV resides). If you need extra VGs activated, you typically have means to specify those. In SLES11, there was a file /etc/sysconfig/lvm with the variable LVM_VGS_ACTIVATED_ON_BOOT, but the mechanism has changed with Dracut.
