I have a SLES 10 sp3 x64 server that I just noticed has a fairly minor NTP
problem. When NTP starts, it tries to contact an old IP address first and
then seemingly moves on to the correct server list in my ntp.conf file.
Here’s what I see when ntp starts:
server:/etc # /etc/init.d/ntp start
Try to get initial date and time via NTP from 10.1.1.6
failed
Starting network time protocol daemon (NTPD) done
The 10.1.1.6 is an old IP that was changed 6+ months ago and does not exist
in the system any more. That IP does not exist anywhere in the ntp.conf
file. Where else could NTP be reading that from? Once it gets past the bad
IP address, an “ntpq -p” shows it talking to the right NTP servers and is
working fine.

YEP! That was it, the “set_initial_date” or whatever. Thanks!

Neato! Next time make changes in yast vs. the files directly (I assume
you did not do that in this case) and it should update both locations
for you.
Good luck.
