the TeX user group recommends to remove the old 2007 package and to install an up-to-date version.
There is a texlive-dummy.rpm package on http://www.ctan.org/pkg/texlive-dummy-opensuse which proves to be useful for preparing a texlive installation in a suse linux environment. The package is used to customize pathes and environment variables for TeX. After having installed the dummy-packages the installation of texlive is straightforward. I did the installation several times without ever stumbling across any problem.
