SLES12 SP2 doesn't start with XEN hypervisor

I install SLES12SP2 and want to run as a XEN Host
But SLES12SP2 doesn’t boot with XEN hypervisor only without
I have Adaptec 8805 Raid Controller. If I change this Controller thru older one 6805
SLES12SP2 Server start normally with XEN or without no problem.
Doesn’t anyone have idea what is here wrong

Thanks for any help

Amila

Do you have the AACRAID drivers from Microsemi (who now own the Adaptec
brand) installed?

I’ve found
https://storage.microsemi.com/en-us/speed/raid/aac/linux/aacraid_linux_drivers_v1.2.1-54013_tgz.php
which includes a driver for SLES12 SP2 (although the included readme
doesn’t reference this).

Hi
The aacraid module is part of the kernel these days;

/sbin/modinfo aacraid
filename:       /lib/modules/4.4.82-6.9-default/kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.ko
version:        1.2.1[50792]-custom
license:        GPL
description: Dell PERC2, 2/Si, 3/Si, 3/Di, Adaptec Advanced Raid Products, HP NetRAID-4M, IBM ServeRAID & ICP SCSI driver

@OP: So it works with the old card, but not with the new card… sure the new card is OK?

With the new card do you see the same BLKID/UUID information for dev-disk-by output with the new card?

Hi,

yes
SLES12 SP2 have a AACRAID drivers the last one downloaded from adaptec
bsxsxen3:~ # rpm -qa | grep aac
aacraid-ueficert-1.2.1-54013.x86_64
aacraid-kmp-default-1.2.1_k4.4.21_69-54013.x86_64

and Controller also have a newest Firmware Version to 33173

regards
Amila

Hi
That driver won’t work since it doesn’t match your running kernel (unless it’s rebuilt automatically), what is the output from the following;

/sbin/modinfo aacraid

Hi malcolmlewis

we updated the server to the latest patches downloaded form th update channel last night.
Current output of modinfo is

/sbin/modinfo aacraid

filename: /lib/modules/4.4.74-92.38-default/weak-updates/updates/aacraid.ko
version: 1.2.1.54013

Hi
So sitting in weak-updates, what about using the kernel module, what is the output from;

/sbin/modinfo /lib/modules/4.4.74-92.38-default/kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.ko

cat /etc/modprobe.d/10-unsupported-modules.conf

If you check the alias lines in the output from your existing module and the kernel module, do they match?

Can you also see the controller in the output from (need to see the PCI ID information from the card);

/sbin/lspci -nnk

Hi malcolmlewis

Every kernel module has a flag ‘supported’. If this flag is not set loading

this module will taint your kernel. You will not get much help with a kernel

problem if your kernel is marked as tainted. In this case you firstly have

to avoid loading of unsupported modules.

Setting allow_unsupported_modules 1 enables loading of unsupported modules

by modprobe, setting allow_unsupported_modules 0 disables it. This can

be overriden using the --allow-unsupported-modules commandline switch.

The kernel 4.4.74-92.38 seems to use the ewer “weak-updates” HBA driver module (1.2.1.54013) on my system. There must be a different setting allowing this behavior. I expect the same booting in XEN mode because my grub configuration does not have special definitions for XEN or NonXEN mode.

The other bad thing is: in XEN mode I have no way to access the console for additional debugging
;-(

regards and optimistic dreams for tonight!

Hi
If you run the following against the in kernel driver and it returns a result (it does on SLES 12 SP3);

/sbin/modinfo aacraid |grep 028D

I would suggest you run the in-kernel version as a test. Look at the logs again as I wonder if the new card creates new blk id’s for the device from this part on;

Hi
Apologies, this one;

/sbin/modinfo /lib/modules/4.4.74-92.38-default/kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.ko |grep 028D

If it is shown, delete the installed rpms and re-boot, but first keep a copy of the output from the blkid command and then compare the logs to see if they change with the new card…

Hi

both kernel modules are showing the same IDs

it seem’s to be fine. Isn’t it?

Hi
Yes and no, since it’s in weak-updates it may have issues with the
running kernel. As a test remove the rpm’s and see how you go with the
in-kernel supported driver rather than the vendor supplied one.

Hi,

Microsemi bring a new driver version on 17. of october, (AACRAID Drivers 1.2.1-55022 for Linux)
so even with this driver I can not get my SLES12SP2 with 8805 Controller running with XEN hypervisor!
Till now no Ideea what can I do?

Just now I have SLES12SP2 Installd with latests kernel version and with in-kernel supported driver

uname -a

Linux bsxsxen3 4.4.90-92.45-default #1 SMP Tue Oct 24 15:03:15 UTC 2017 (1094ae5) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

find / -name aacraid.ko

/lib/modules/4.4.59-92.17-default/kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.ko
/lib/modules/4.4.90-92.45-default/kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.ko

If I install SLES12SP2 with 6805 Adaptec Controller XEN hypervisor works without any Problem. (on same Hardware!)

Any Idee what I can do?

Thanks

Hi again,

Did anybody has SLES 12 SP3 - XEN running with Adaptec RAID 8805 Controller???
I open my Call by SUSE last year November 2017!! Till now I got 2 Patches, both doesn’t work and till now no solution!!!

Microsemi bring today a new driver version aacraid_linux_drivers_v1.2.1-56008 but also it doesn’t solve my Problem!!
SLES12 SP3 doesn’t start with XEN hypervisor

Please , did somebody have any Idea what I can do???

Thanks

Amila
