cannot set up printers

i am unable to install any printers
get message timed out waiting for lpinfo
running lpinfo -m or -v from command prompt hangs indefinitely with no output and needs ctrl-c to terminate

problem now fixed
did a complete re-install of OS
something must have gone wrong the first time
