Arthur sounds like they ‘said’:

So my response to Arthur’s comment is…
I use the email client software on my droid tablet and set it up as
imap.

POP
Nothing stays on the Google server.
Arthur:
POP, and I have Gmail save a copy. That way I can access from any
device and still get current email. I don’t get any email through
Google that I’d care if everyone in the world read it, so don’t care if
it sits on their server.
The only syncing I do is with the calendar. I entered dates and
reminders in Google calendar years ago that I didn’t want to re-enter
in Thunderbird, so I just have the Google Calendar sync with
Thunderbird. : )
