SLES 12 desktop is lagging (gnome-shell cpu usage is high)

Whenever I try to use graphical application, cpu usage spikes and graphics starts to lag.
Editing in eclipse is annyoingly laggy.
For example: just opening a System Monitor causes cpu usage to jump over 80%.
And it’s a gnome-shell process that that uses 80% cpu.

Host OS: Win7
Guest OS: SLES12SP1
VMWare Payer 12

Any ideas how to improve performance?

Have you installed the open-vm-tools package on your guest? If not, you are missing some virtual drivers,
