Yup - that’s Election Day! So make sure you cast your absentee ballots early, and come join us in DC. We’re going to be in a beautiful location - the Washington Marriott Wardman Park. Beautiful hotel in a quiet neighborhood just 2 Metro stops away from the center of the US capital city.
We’re looking at a few program enhancements this year, so keep your eyes open for news about Registration (early March), Call for Papers (late March), streamlined process for certification exam registrations, and the always-popular evening entertainment activities…
Does anyone have a favorite “thing” about SUSECON that they want to make sure we do again this year? Let me know!

Certification labs on the last day - being able to come away from
SUSECon with a certification (CLA, have to wait for CLP result) adds
personal value (justifies the long trip from outside US) if not business
value. I’d like to see LPI return and/or Linux Foundation exams
available too.

Ditto, very happy. Orlando has been great for the years it was there, but
this could be nice too. We’ll see what the events folks make of it; if
nothing else, visitors will have some great other sites to see should they
choose that option.

Not being an American, well, nobody’s perfect.
I asked around and apparently busy-ness isn’t that crazy around election
time. Inauguration is probably another story, but is in late January so
all is well.

Agreed. Also, the pre-conference courses seem to be pretty popular.

It would seem, like Orlando, it’s easy access to Europeans that want to
attend. Probably better access actually. I don’t know how costs
compare, however. Washington has a lot to see and do so there will
probably be many attendees making an extended trip of it! I’ll be
interested to see how registration numbers compare making it a little
easier over last year for those in the Americas to attend and a little
more difficult for those in Europe.
As time for the conference approaches, we should probably start a
discussion thread on best/most interesting attractions in Washington
and the D.C. area.

Thanks for the input. We will definitely continue with the certification exams. This year we’re looking at having a “testing center” available throughout the week so that you can take exams at any time during he week, including Friday (limited space T/W/Th, but lots of room on Friday). We may also make the exam times schedulable (is that a word?) in the session block along with the breakout sessions. So you could wait until September to schedule exam times and work them in with the sessions you know you want to see.
Oh, and re: the election time - like Kim said, it’s not that busy in DC. There may be a few cool things going on, but for the most part the candidates are all in their home states on that date, watching the results on TV like the rest of us! But unless you are a VIP with a limo, stay out of DC in January during the inauguration!
That’s a great idea. I’ll see if we can get something on the FAQ that will direct people to some sites. If you haven’t been to DC, there are some places that you will definitely want to see. The vicinity of the Capital Mall is really amazing, with all the famous government buildings, and a host of museums. I’ll put out a little teaser on that one… you may get to see the most popular museum as a guest of SUSECON… 'nuff for now.
Stay tuned on this. We’ll formally announce when we open registration, but it looks like it will be $199/night. Pricier than other places we have been, but a great deal for DC! And we purposely got the pricing held over so that people can come early or stay late for a little vacation time.
