In our environment we have installed Likewise and have successfully joined our Domain on SLES 11. When we tested that Likewise was configured correctly by switching from root to our AD accounts. But when we attempt to SSH to these systems with our AD accounts we keep getting the following error:
“Permissions on the password database may be too restrictive.”
I created a local user and am able to ssh to it as well as root.
Since we have no need for them, I have disabled AppArmor and the SuSeFirewall. I have also verified that the File Permisions are set to Easy.
Please let me know if you have any ideas as to what could be causing this.
Just to be clear, you’re going from ‘root’ to an unprivileged user from
‘Likewise’? That’s not a great test because as long as an account
exists ‘root’ can become it without any password tests. What happens if
you login to the console directly (via a TTY) as one of those users?
I don’t know anything about Likewise off the top of my head; how does it
interact with this, or all of these users just domain (from microsoft
active directory (MAD)) users? If they are MAD users then perhaps the
domain authentication isn’t working as well as you think it should yet.
Good luck.
