SLES12 with 0 updates since installation (support expired). I am downloading the install media and will do an offline update. My question is this, this server has 2 Xen VM’s of server 2012 R2. Do i need to perform the offline update any differently given the 2 Xen VM’s? Anything i should be aware of?
The offiline upgrade to SP1 should be quite uncritical. As you might know SP1 is a rather small Service Pack and the offline option is always preferred to avoid issues and reduce complexity, because no services and processes are running.
We usually try to do the offline upgrade do to the reduced complexity but my question is specifically to Xen VM’s. I assume Xen has been updated in SP1 and i want to make double sure that the update to SP1 does not break the existing VM’s.
As i figured… The VM’s are working but are extremely slow. I run virt-manager and see a new VM after the upgrade called Domain-0. What is this? It was not there before the upgrade to SP1. I can not gain console access to it and it appears to be hogging all the RAM which is why, i believe, everything else is extremely slow. Any idea what this is? And can i shut it down/delete it?
Well, i now know domain-0 should NOT be shut down and deleted. How do i adjust the RAM on domain-0? According to virt-manager, it is taking all but approx 2gb of RAM abd therefore, the VM’s are almost non-responsive

In “yast2 bootloader” of SLES11SP4 it I added “dom0_mem=2048M” under
“Additional Xen Hypervisor Parameters” for the Xen entry. I don’t have a
SLES12SP1 machine with Xen yet, but I guess there should be a similar
entry somewhere.
The value 2048M (this machine has 32GB) was mentioned as a good start
setting for most workloads in some online Xen guide.

I don’t see any setting like you described in yast2 bootloader. Where would i find this entry in SLES12 SP1?
Will my current registration remain in tact if I upgrade to SP1?

Yes, access to updates etc is time based (check via SCC) not release
based.

Thank you. I ended up having to put in the reg code twice. I was hoping it would do it automatically during the install process, but it failed despite internet connectivity. Once I was up and running I had to re-register another time to get content. I will check out the online upgrade on my next server. Hopefully the process will be less cumbersome.
