Just thought I would ask here in case anyone has any suggestions.
I implemented a WSUS server to make sure our PCs were getting patches.
Seems like every month there is a patch that hangs the PC (Win7 x64).
When the user shuts down the PC, it will say “Installing 1 of X”. When
they arrive in the morning, it still says the same thing. We have to
power it off and on and usually I have to go in and manually check for
updates and make sure the patches all get installed. Ran into the
same problem last night. 2 PCs hung at “Installing 1 of 1”. Restarted
them and WSUS now says they are 100% patched. Doesn’t make sense that
this would keep occurring every month. Nothing I have found
permanently fixes this. Any thoughts?

I have one. Switch to ZPM!! :-)[/color]
Why does that not surprise me. I do have ZCM, just not ZPM. WSUS
is free (I know, you get what you pay for), so I can’t expect much,
but it seems like it should work. So any other suggestions about how
to fix this?

So my response to KeN’s comment is…
Is it the same update? I read somewhere about a couple different
updates (1 for win7, 1 for win8) that have been re-released along the
lines of 10 different times in the last year.
It’s an update to help ‘prepare’ the machine to migrate to win10 and
there have been problems with them over and over, hence the re-release.
Just FYI I’ve never had this happen before yesterday. Just a regular
laptop. I had to shut it down “Installing 2 of 12”, reboot, and then
manually start the update. It finished, and then it said more updates
were available so I started the update process. It’s currently sitting
there saying “Installing update 1 of 1” and it’s been like that for
about 20 minutes now. I’m thinking I’m gonna have to reboot it again
to get it to finish. Like I said, this has never happened to me before
so it may be something to do with the recent updates. FWIW.
Well it finally broke loose on it’s own after about 30 minutes,
rebooted the machine and finished installing on it’s own. So…move
along. Nothing to see here.

So my response to KeN’s comment is…
Another weird thing we’ve run into, the latest update for silverlight
doesn’t want to install on our win764 machines, so we have to use m$'s
silverlight fixing tool to remove it, then let it install via wsus
again.

The problem ones here sit for 14 hours doing nothing. (5 PM one day
until 7 AM the next).

I don’t think it is that one. I need to do some more digging on this.
We had quite a few 32bit machines in a similar situation.
What it came down to for us was the group policy which specified the
autoupdate settings including the WSUS server URL was being removed
part way through the update when the machine was being shutdown.
I ended up going around all the machines, logging in locally and
setting up the update settings with gpedit.msc rather than pushing
those settings via ZCM.
I’d suggest that you manually set the update settings on one if the
machines that consistently has the issue and see if that resolves the
problem.

Um, sorry to say Joe, but the issue can and does exist in ZPM as well.

There’s a few MS updates that weren’t supposed to apply, but do try (ZPM
is affected as well). In particular: KB 2952664. It’s been re-released
once already, and the same issue (at least in ZPM) occurs.
It tries to apply, but can’t because it’s “not applicable”.
I think this is the one that MS said should never hit Windows 7
Enterprise editions, but it does (at least with ZPM).
