Just wondering what people are doing for backups these days.
I have a tough time getting my little <1TB of data to tape in
the alloted timeframe so I was curious as to what some of the
bigger shops were doing. I am shopping for new backup solutions.
Currently I write 1 backup to disk and then to tape. I have
two servers splitting the load due to tape size. The new setup
will have a 3TB tabe so I can scale back to 1 device again.
Throughput is the big problem and I’m not sure how fast the new
setup will run, typically I get 2 to 3 hours knocked off the
backup time everytime we upgrade which puts me back in the window,
but with morons keeping 10GB worth of email it gets to be challenging.
If our internet access wasn’t butkus all of the time I’d seriously
consider cloud storage, but if I can’t fit my backup in on at
GB wire speeds, no chance going across the T1…assuming it’s up.

So my response to GofBorg’s comment is…
We are still backing up to tape, and we are starting to run into the
same issue you are from time to time. Sometimes the backup seems to
just crawl and other days it zips along.
Not sure what we are going to do with more and more and more data being
generated and never being deleted.

I am not very big on putting company data on someone elses servers (the
overused marketing term “the cloud”).
I have some locations backing up to a NAS device. In some cases the NAS
is in a different building connected by fiber which gives more security.
In some cases I just back up the NAS to a docked hard drive during the
day and it gets rotated off site.

We’re not a big company, but I have about 1.5 TB to backup. I use
LTO-5. Looked into disk last time I upgraded, but couldn’t find a
solution I was comfortable with. I like the idea of syncing to an
offsite server, but would prefer it under my control, not the “cloud”.
And only 10 GB of email? I have some users up around 40. 
Hopefully the archive solution I will be implementing soon will solve
some of that though.

We stopped using tape a few years ago when the price of hard drives
dropped below the pain threshold. We use an internal drive cage that is
hot swappable. The only real problem I’ve had has been Windows. It
won’t always turn loose of the drive and when you swap it the backup gets
corrupted and the new drive doesn’t get recognized. In Linux land it
just works.

Yes. We are using a staged backup. Holding some revisions on disk for
faster access and then all goes to a tape library.
Yeah… 40GB+ mailboxes… unfortunately we have them too… but seems
to be no problem for groupwise
