Can we add packman repository to install applications

Have you tried https://software.opensuse.org/ ?

Transmission is available for example here: https://software.opensuse.org/package/transmission#pkg-options

Given the Enterprise bit of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED)
please note that installing packages from sources other than the
SUSE online patch channels and/or Patch Finder download site is
unsupported by SUSE. If you want additional packages to those
available with SLED you may want to look at using openSUSE
instead of SLED.

Thanks Simon, I feel SLED 12 SP1 is more stable then Leap 42.1, so you are saying it is not at all possible to install other applications like audacious, transmission etc… for home use?

No I’m just pointing out that by adding applications, etc. to SLED you
risk being unsupported should something break.

Personally for home use I would recommend openSUSE over SLED and if
you’re finding SLED is more stable than openSUSE I’d report this in the
openSUSE Forums[1] so the latter could be improved. I’ll also note that
moving forward SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE have a closer
relationship so they should be equally as good.

As Simon wrote before, SLED is built to be stable since it’s locked-in for companies and desktop users which value stability (not bleeding edge).

I use transmission for torrents. Don’t use it much these days but it’s installed in my SLED11 SP4 along with many other programs not found in the original SLED11SP4 dvd & SLED11SP4 sdk.

As a matter of fact, i use the following repositories below when i want to install an application. of course, i have to make sure that these dependencies don’t overwrite the original ones in SLED11SP4 (you may have to reinstall from scratch if you break something, it happened to me last year when trying to install a xorg update. Good things is, the system warns you before that happens so be careful). As long as the previous doesn’t happen, i go ahead with the installation:

*** remember, this is what i use for SLED11SP4, your version is different ****

[LIST]
[] http://packman.inode.at/suse/SLE_11/
[] SLED11SP1_AddonDVD_i586.iso from http://www.pcc-services.com/sled10_rpms.html
[*] software.opensuse.org and dependiencies taken sometimes from rpm.pbone.net. i have found that SLE11 doesn’t complain and it works nicely when i install dependiencies from opensuse 11.3 & 11.4 that i can’t find in the original dvd media.

off-topic: for some reason, i have not received any updates for SLED11SP4 for several weeks, however, when i go to the website, i see plenty of updates posted for SLES11SP4. i sent an email to crc asking for more information, since i bought a 3-year subscription last year to receive patches. when i bought the 3-year subscription, there was no quick-end-of-life for SLED11SP4 back then. am i entitled for a refund?

So your hardware (cpu) is only 32bit or only came with a 32bit OS?

Use OpenSUSE 13.1 repos:

the above will allow installation of apps like xmgrace, ImageMagik etc.

For apps like ffmpeg, mplayer, vlc etc, use Packman

By this I was able to install applications like transmission, VLC, audacious and Sound Juicer…

Hi
That is just down right wrong!! openSUSE 13.1 is no where near
compatible with SLE 12 SP1, you will break, potentially compromise your
system, openSUSE Leap 42.1 was based on SLE 12 SP1.

If you really need applications, build them or look on OBS for SLE
versions.

ImageMagick is part of SLE, xmgrace is in the graphics repo (just ask
them to add your required build target).

For SLE if all you want is vlc, use the VideoLan repos (after all it
is their product?).

Hi krishna,

You can use vuze for torrent client
http://www.vuze.com/download.php
Download & extract it on you home directory
During run using terminal, it may complain about installed jdk, for that, you need to download & extract jre (.tar.gz) format to you home directory.
Now open the vuze file from vuze directory, and put the new path.
For Example::
JAVA_CHECK_DIRS="/usr/java/latest /usr/java /usr/lib/jvm/latest /usr/lib/jvm /home/user_name/jre***"

To run vuze, open terminal & type “vuze/vuze”

You can also add as an application, for that you may need to do few tricks, like, copy files, etc, etc.

For Media, you can use, multimediacodecs_sled12.

Hi Malcolm,
actually my laptop is x64, the topic is, that i have some old 32-bit i586 applications/rpm’s i use everyday and cannot live without. unfortunately, i can’t find an x64 rpm counterpart for these old programs these days. and i am unskilled at creating/building anything from source.rpm or installing tarballs.
that’s why i installed the 32-bit sled11sp4 along with the sdk dvd in case additional original dependencies are needed.

upgrading to sled12 is not in my plans. when my sled11sp4 becomes really outdated/deprecated/obsolete, then i might probably have a look at the devuan/mate combination and keep running my old programs in a sled11sp4 virtual machine.

right now, my computer has the perfect setup for my needs and i’m happy. i don’t install/update programs frequently. i just use what i need and keep it as is (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it).
the only problem i see is updating firefox. the solution is already resolved in another topic i raised in this forum which you kindly answered in how to do it as well.

Hi
There should be no real reason you can’t run 32bit applications, 32bit
libs are available. If you get the urge to update to a 64bit system eg
SLED 12 SP1, then if you provide a list I’m sure we can help… one
easy way is to run the ldd command against the binary (may need to
check if what is called is a wrapper script to see where the binary
is) to find the libs it needs.

There is also no reason to use KVM or even docker to run those last
apps…
