Convert SLES11 to SLES11 for vmware

Hello

In my organization we utilize Licensed Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 (64-bit) virtual machines and we have a VMware vSphere 5 Enterprise Plus license and recently we became aware that VMware have SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for VMware for free to owners of a VMware vSphere 5 Enterprise Plus license.

I would like to know if is possible to convert our SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 (64-bit) virtual machines to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for Vmware virtual machines? So that we don’t need to renew our current SUSE subscriptions.

What options do we have? Can we convert one system to another, or convert the key?

(I already contacted vmware and they support person told me to contact someone on Novell)

Thanks

Have you read the FAQ?
http://www.vmware.com/products/sles-for-vmware/faq.html

Have you read the SLES for VMware - New Terms and Conditions
http://www.vmware.com/products/sles-for-vmware/get.html#c207168

There are differences between SLES and SLES for VMware. IIRC, SLES for
VMware doesn’t provide support for Xen. There are differences in the
EULA and the way in which the product is supported.

What you would have to do is talk to VMware to determine:

  1. How many SLES for VMware you are entitled to deploy.
  2. If your current deployments conform to the VMware EULA.
  3. Whether your current deployments can be covered by your VMware
support and, if not, what options do you have other than
rip-and-replace to obtain coverage from VMware.

Novell (SUSE) have a support TID that covers turning a SLES for VMware
server into a plain SLES one - see
http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7007761

I would say it’s down to VMware to produce an equivalent procedure to go
from plain SLES to SLES for VMware.

Hi Kevin
I was hoping that there is some script to convert one to another but looks like there is none and we need to migrate applications.
It is good to know that Suse for VMware is only compatible with ESXi and not others hypervisors.

Thanks.

Hi Simon

Very interesting!

Is good to know that If we decide in the future abandon VMware we have this option to convert to pure Suse the machines.

Thanks.
