Most people seem to automatically understand that once they’ve left the
company, they cannot expect access to their corporate email; but today
our outgoing CEO asked for just that. I’m sure this is a bad idea for
legal/liability reasons. Have any of you faced such a situation before?

I have.
I immediately put together a conference call between the legal dept. and
the new acting CEO and myself. They made the decision.

In some countries that is a legal right, to have access to your
mailbox 1 year after departure. If not stated otherwise in the
household.
