development start

I was wondering where to start my development carrier?
I have some scripting in shell/C++ and more. I need to do some gui
stuff and even some prompt stuff. webbased?

Any suggestion what i need?
SLED 11
software, mono?

Do you need any source editor like visual studio?
You can try some IDEs in linux: eclipse, codeblocks, and so fourth.
