Display is not loaded after SP3 update

After running zypper update and restarting, I landed on a command prompt and the GUI is not starting.

From previous posts, I tried running sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx but it didn’t start.

startx fails and I’m able to do gdm start as root only.

Here’s the contents of the xorg.0.log file

Hi
How was the fglrx driver originally installed, via rpm or manually
build from source?

So your running a hybrid gfx card?

[QUOTE=malcolmlewis;23792]Hi

It is an HP ProBook 4540s laptop that was preloaded with SLED11 SP2 and just yesterday I updated it to SP3

I believe it is x11-video-fglrxG02-HP but it says (System Packages) under Repo so does this mean I have to search for the driver over the internet?

I checked HP site and found the linux graphics driver which contained 2 rpms:

x11-video-fglrxG02-HP-8.982-1.1.x86_64.rpm
ati-fglrxG02-HP-kmp-default-8.982_3.0.13_0.27-1.1.x86_64.rpm

I installed them one by one but this didn’t solve the problem!

I recalled that I had that problem before and was keeping on my HD another file:

amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13-4-x86.x86_64.run

had to use the --force option to install it and then tried but it didn’t work at the first time and when I checked the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, it said something like found screen but didn’t match any of the configuration so I moved /etc/X11/xorg.conf to xorg.conf.old and then tried and this time it worked!

I guess I should expect problems each time the X11 server is being updated!

One last thing, when I run zypper update I get the below message:
The following package updates will NOT be installed:
kernel-default kernel-default-base kernel-default-extra

Do you have any idea why is that?

Thanks,
Ahmed

Hi
So the system has a hybrid graphics card. Is it possible in the BIOS to
disable the intel or ATI gpu?

The reason the kernel won’t update is probably the ATI driver (kmp), do
you specifically need the ATI card running? Else if you can disable and
live with the intel one, it may be an easier solution.

I tried looking around in BIOS and I’m not sure if there is such option!

It might be a silly question but how to be sure? or how to disable one of these cards then?

Thanks,
Ahmed

Hi
Have a read here;
http://planetoss.com/articles/how-to-disable-the-discrete-amd-graphics-card-in-linux/

If you don’t need the ATI driver, I would suggest sticking to the intel
one…

If you proceed with disabling the fglrx driver, then would use sax2 to
use the intel one.

Hi
Not really sure what to do, have you tried using the sax2 command with intel instead of fglrx?

Can you post the output from;

/sbin/lspci -nnk|grep -A3 VGA

[QUOTE=malcolmlewis;24000]Hi

The laptop is working now, it is just the problem of the update which you suggested might be related to dual display issue.

Here you’re the output of /sbin/lspci -nnk|grep -A3 VGA

Hi
OK, so you don’t have the fglrx present, it’s using the radeon module. So you would run sax2 with radeon rather than fglrx.

How would I do that? and if I do, wouldn’t this lead me again to the same initial problem of not being able to start display?

Thanks,
Ahmed

Hi
No, since your system is calling the radeon driver not fglrx…

Can you show the output from;

zypper se fglrx
zypper se amd

Or if you look in YaST software management and top left select
‘repositories’ in the dropdown and highlight in the HP repository then
in the list are them some ADM/ATI drivers listed with a tick in the
checkbox.

Here you’re the output of the two commands. I recall that there was a package with HP extension installed but don’t know why I can’t find it now! I tried to refresh the repo list but same thing, the HP extension package of fglrx is not there

Hi
OK, looking at post #3 it’s this one “x11-video-fglrxG02-HP”, can you remove this;

zypper rm x11-video-fglrxG02-HP

If it removes ok, then try updating again.

And zypper update complains about the below packages

The following package updates will NOT be installed:
  kernel-default kernel-default-base kernel-default-extra

Is there a way to know they packages will not be installed!

Thanks,
