xdm not working on console after update

Hi!

After installing the key for SLES 12 on our DELL PowerEdge R320, I got some updates for X11:

2015-03-27 08:00:47 xorg-x11-server-7.6_1.15.2-21.1.x86_64.rpm installed ok

Additional rpm output:

Updating /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager…

After this, it seems that I can’t log in to gdm, because the screen turns black after the green running dots have been running 8 times.

I changed /etc/permissions.local to be able to run startx after [Ctrl]+[Alt]+F1, but it is still the same black screen even if I restart the display-manager.

If I change DISPLAYMANAGER to “kdm” in the /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager you get the grey SUSE-background, and a system error window in the lower left corner, but you can’t actually access anything at all.

The only thing in the ~/.xsession-error-logs is:
gnome-session-is-accelerated: llvmpipe detected.

The only error I have seen in the Xorg.n.log is:
[ 2144.993] (EE) mga: The PCI device 0x534 at 06@00:00:0 has a kernel module claiming it.
[ 2144.993] (EE) mga: This driver cannot operate until it has been unloaded.

No files in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/-folder has been changed/updated.

The xdm status is up-and-running:
display-manager.service - X Display Manager
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/display-manager.service; enabled)
Active: active (running) since Mon 2015-04-06 17:12:51 CEST; 58min ago
Process: 3364 ExecStop=/usr/lib/X11/display-manager stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Process: 3663 ExecReload=/usr/lib/X11/display-manager reload (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Process: 3377 ExecStart=/usr/lib/X11/display-manager start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Main PID: 3390 (gdm)
CGroup: /system.slice/display-manager.service
├─3390 /usr/sbin/gdm
└─3396 /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -background none -noreset -verbose 3 -logfile /dev/null -auth /run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-FpAmt3/database -seat seat0 vt7

We did a test with enabling VNC, but that did not help. It is black screen on VNC also.

I have tried booting with both nomodeset and failsafe, but no luck, nothing else than the black screen…

I am out of ideas right now - someone who can point me in the right direction of further analysis?

BR
/Mattias

Well since no one’s else has replied…

Well that shows one update not some updates. What else got installed at the same time? Did all the updates install successfully? Are there any outstanding updates? Since X isn’t starting you can use zypper. If you don’t already know, this will show available updates

$ zypper refresh
$ zypper lu
This will install all updates
$ zypper up
If GDM doesn’t appear then you can't log in to it ;)

Do either of
$ pidof Xorg
$ pidof gdm

Return a PID? From what you’ve said it sounds like they won’t.

KDM isn’t included in SLES 12. I don’t have a SLES 12 install to hand right now but if the comments in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager about values for DISPLAYMANAGER are the same as in SLED 12, which I suspect they are, they somewhat misleading. It’s not a list of values that are valid for SLES 12.

If X is broken to the extent that it fails to start up boot I doubt anything is going to get written to any user’s .xsession-errors file. Does the time stamp on the file you’re looking at indicate that it’s been updated within a relevant time period?

What’s the output of

$ lspci -nnk | grep -A 3 VGA

That should show the make/mode, PCI id of video card and the module that’s being used for it. E.g. on the machine I’m typing on I get this:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03) Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device [8086:7270] Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915

Is there an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

What’s the output of

$ grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*

Does the PID indicated there exist?

When posting contents of log files and such, wrap it in CODE tags, it helps a lot with readability and prevents the forum software potentially turning bits of it in to smiley faces and such. Look for the # button on the toolbar when composing.
What else got installed at the same time?
A whole lot.

Yes.

No, no outstanding updates.
zypper refresh tells me everything is up-to-date.

OK. Good to know.

X seems to be starting. I get the .xsession-errors files for every startup and every manual startx, but they do not contain anything else than:
I do not get the Xorg..log-file everytime though…

There is no matrox/mga indicated. Seems like the xorg-configuration for the mga is lost, right? How do I get it back? I tried to reinstall the driver, but that didn’t help. Or maybe I did it the wrong way?
When posting contents of log files and such, wrap it in CODE tags, it helps a lot with readability and prevents the forum software potentially turning bits of it in to smiley faces and such. Look for the # button on the toolbar when composing.
I hope this is more readable now.

Thank you very much for your help!

Well X is actually running so seems like just it’s configuration is messed up/wrong.

You could try copying /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see if that at least makes GDM visible.

You could also

$ systemctl stop display-manager $ Xorg -configure
Then copy the resulting file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

No luck. :frowning:

That went bad, too:

Rebooting using that one resulted in an earlier startup crash, returning to the terminal login, after just 16 rolling SUSE-dots… But, you might have guessed that already.

I will see if DELL can help me restore the xorg.conf for me.

Thanks for you help and time!

Slowly, I have started to re-create the xorg.conf, because I was too late for DELL support for this weekend (I’ll call them on Monday, but I really can’t restart this server when people are here working…)

This is what I have come up with:
