Google found this for me:

http://www.techtalkz.com/tips-n-tricks/3269-reset-root-password-suse-linux-10-1-other-distributions.html

The init=/bin/bash method is the one I always use and it works well.

Good luck.

If the method(s) ab suggest don’t work for some reason here’s a more
complicated method:

Boot the machine from a LiveCD. Any version of Linux will do so long as
it’s a LiveCD. Or you can use a bootable USB flash drive. Any media that
contains a copy of Linux you can boot the machine from. Boot the machine
from that media, create a new user and set it’s password. Then mount the
root filesystem from the machine’s harddisk and copy the encrypted
password from /etc/shadow on the Live version of Linux and put it in to
/etc/shadow on machine’s harddisk in place of the existing password for
root. You must make sure that you’re using the same password encryption
method on both systems.
