Installation of new server

Dear Team,

We are going to install SLES12 SP3 OS on production server. So, I have few queries. Please check below :

 1. Can I install SLES12 SP3 OS on production server ?
 2. Can I use btrfs & xfs [ /home ] file system to format server ?
 3. Which file system should I use for /boot partition ?
 4. Which version is stable for file system and OS.

My higher authority want confirmation from your side. So, I will proceed further. Also, If SUSE publish any web pages which can answer above question then please suggest.

Please help.

Regards,
Rajesh Kathar

Hi
What hardware/cpu is the production server?

 1. Yes, btrfs and xfs are the defaults.
 2. I use ext3/4 (512MB size) for my /boot
 3. SLE 12 series… but your wanting SP3…

Have a read of the release notes here;
https://www.suse.com/releasenotes/x86_64/SUSE-SLES/12-SP3/

 1. Can I install SLES12 SP3 OS on production server ?

Yes, and I am already doing so, as are others.

 1. Can I use btrfs & xfs [ /home ] file system to format server ?

Yes; XFS probably makes a lot of sense for /home, and Btrfs should be used
for the rest to get the most out of the snapshot/rollback functionality
which is part of the design in SLES 12.

 1. Which file system should I use for /boot partition ?

I use the default, so it is Btrfs; this means that even if you corrupt
your kernel somehow (run out of disk space while patching, accident in a
script, etc.) or you install a kernel patch that somehow interferes with
your system (hardware driver issue, etc.), you can rollback via Grub and
get up and running without needing external media, some sort of “recovery”
Linux bootup.

 1. Which version is stable for file system and OS.

SLES 12 is great, and SP3 seems to be fine; I also have a lot of clients
on SP2 still.

Good luck.
