Can someone clarify whether the 1 year, 1-2 socket physical subscription allows the installation of SLES 11 SP4 in VMware for testing? For example, I’d like to virtually run the OS on my laptop for fiddling with the package manager and system settings without consequences.

Firstly please note that this forum is for issues relating to SUSE
Linux Enterprise for SAP Applications which I don’t think you’re
asking about.
I can’t answer your specific question but I will point out that
you can request a 60-day trial licence for SLES from
https://www.suse.com/products/server/download (URL may wrap)
which offers access to patches and updates. After that SLES will
still work but no longer receive any patches or updates from
SUSE. You can also download SLES and choose not to register
it.

I’m building a HANA and B1 environment, so I’m using this which seems to be based on SLES for SAP Applications: http://suse.com/slesb1hana. I hoped to run it in VMware without violating a license agreement.
To your point about using the SLES demo, what else is different from SLES for SAP Applications besides the kernel parameter adjustments and SAP installation during the setup?

SLES for SAP Applications is an optimized version of SLES so most
things, including package management and system settings, from “regular”
SLES also apply to SLES for SAP Applications.

The installer image for SAP BOne Partners could not be used with VMWare, as it does not recognize VMWare as the right hardware.
The image does automatic partitioning depending on the hardware manufacturer for certified BOne machines, which fails on VMWare as it is no hardware.
So you need to install all by yourself manual without using the SAP BOne Partner installer image.

we have got slesb1hana image (SLES11_SP4_B1.x86_64-0.0.6.preload.iso) based on SLES 11.4 in Vmware 6 working successfully. We have tested successfully on Dell R720/730.
You have to do below steps so installer can detect hardware correctly. Steps taken from SAP Business One, version for SAP HANA on VMWare vSphere guide http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-57924
After creating the VM that you will run for HANA take the following steps:
Shutdown the VM
Go to vSphere Center → Select your VM → Edit Settings → VM Options → Advanced → Configuration Parameters → Edit Configuration → Add Row
Enter new parameter “Smbios.reflectHost” with value
“TRUE”
Start the VM
This will pass the real vendor/model to the VM BIOS, and if it’s a supported vendor/model, the installer will detect it properly.
Yes this is fine, but this will work only on SAP BusinessOne certified hardware - on all other modelÂs it will fail.
