I’ve had good luck with 1and1 (one and one) for the past year.

Just to clarify…I host all my own sites. I just need reliable
Domain Registration and DNS.

dyn.com seems to be pretty reasonable and good. I’ve been using the free
dyndns address for a few years now.

My sister used to work for Network Solutions before they were sold to
Web.com. (Not a technical position…)
Wonder if they went downhill after the sale.
It’s definitely a different world our there now for them than it was
years ago.

Then why not host your own DNS too?
I use UKREG as a registrar - their prices are reasonable, and they made
getting my Glue set up almost painless.

Here’s who I used to use back when I managed an environment. They were
always reliable and very inexpensive.
Ask Danita–I think she still uses them today.

I may end up paying for their entry-level service, though - with the
recent change on the free accounts that you have to log into the website
every 30 days (something I’m prone to forget if I have to do that “by
hand”), it may not be worth the hassle of continually updating the script
I wrote to take care of that every time they change the login form.

I had to quit using them due to their changes over time to not free.
I just needed a traditional dyndns type service to link a single ip to a
dns name. dyndns no longer makes that free.
I googled and found a fantastic free service that has lots of community
donated names
routemehome.com fits my needs.
rip the once industry standard go dynamic dns service that even made a nerd
noun. Good riddance to the new owners greed.
IMHO.

That’s what I do, and judging by the DNS issues a lot of my smaller
customers have, I’m very happy.

That’s true. I still have a free account because I’ve been using them
for something like 10 years. They took wildcard support away a few years
back, but I only need 3 addresses.

I can understand that they have had challenges with keeping the free
service going and have had to adjust their model. I do wish, though,
they had done what a lot of businesses do: Continue the stuff the
customer signed up for without reduction in services.
Verizon still has my business only because they actually had a truly
unlimited data plan, and I signed up on it. They haven’t forced me to
“upgrade” to a limited plan yet, even though you can’t buy it any more.
I can’t (for example) change my plan to include text messaging (so I get
dinged $0.20 per SMS sent/received on our phones if we forget to use
Google Voice) without changing the data plan. If I do that, I end up
paying more for less data.
I don’t use a lot of data on my plan, but I like not having to worry
about accidental overages.
But when I decide to get a new phone, it’ll probably be with a different
carrier - maybe Sprint or T-Mobile (whichever one spreads the cost of the
phone out but doesn’t require a contract).
