I seem to have a lot of problems connecting my newsreader to the forum
today. Lots of timeouts and delays. Anything going on out there or
do I need to look into things here?

KeN Etter sounds like they ‘said’:

So my response to KeN’s comment is…
Seems fine for me, one might say a bit busy today too.

Which newsreader are you using? Can you describe how you
feel/experience/observe these “timeouts and delays”? Details, in this
case, will really help.
Good luck.
Forte Agent. It claims not to post new messages. It does not retrieve
new headers and it does not retrieve message bodies. It tells me
Connection closed unexpectedly by server. But looking at the forum
through a web browser, it appears that some of my posts are getting
posted. Actually they get posted multiple times because I keep trying
because Agent says it never posted. But I can’t read anything though
Agent because it doesn’t retrieve anything. It always used to work
flawlessly. For a while now I have had intermittent issues, but today
is just really bad. I’m starting to wonder how much traffic is going
through my internet connection. I need to look at that.

Well, I’m guessing either your side or something outside of Novell. I
know somebody who downloaded tons of forums, kinda from scratch, using a
different news reader, yesterday. Sure, possible things have changed in
the last day, but I have not noticed this particular symptom. I’m not
saying it’s your client, but your thoughts about your connection may be
valid, or maybe something else on your network (router, network or host
firewall, bad wireless, stupid ISP, etc.) may be at fault. Worst case
perhaps get a LAN trace of NNTP from your workstation and see if you
really are getting resets from the server and then, if so, try from
another location and see if it happens there (away from your ISP, work,
home, or whatever). Post the LAN trace for analysis somewhere if stuck.
Good luck.
Hmmm…just testing with another news reader and it appears to work fine.
I’ve contacted tech support for my typical news reader to see what they have
to say.
I tried it from home, still no go. As far as I can tell, either
something is up with the Novell’s server or with the Agent software. If
you want to look at it, a trace is available at
www.msktd.com/trace/agent.pcap I have requested support from Forte Inc,
but haven’t heard back from them yet.
Regards,
Ken

Well, the LAN trace is very straight-forward: Your NNTP client is sending
this:
XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP TERMINATOR
Once that happens, presumably to enable some kind of compression or
something, the connection is closed by the server. Apparently this is a
magical feature that Forte Inc. thinks should work, but I do not think
it’s a standard at all (not part of any RFCc I’ve found so far) and so it
seems like something that should not be sent unless it is known to be
supported by the server. In fact, if I put in XFEATURE followed by
anything the server closes the connection on me.
So how do you move forward? First, disable whatever it is in Forte Agent
that enables that use of a non-feature.
If that does not work, use another client.
Good luck.

For the past several days my Thunderbird news reader wouldn’t even
connect. Just started working again a little while ago.

Bob,
if you looked on the web at that time you would have seen a notice
explaining that it was a hardware problem…

Oh… I knew there was a problem. Didn’t bother me. I knew it would be
fixed eventually. The nature of our business, right?

One must remember that if Shaun is fixing it, the “eventually” time
would be measured in decades. He troubleshoots by government committee
and uses the government model of purchasing replacement parts. That
means that Shaun will have enough time to go to school on the equipment
that is in question, raise a herd of sheep for his enjoyment, raise a
brood of ducks for the duck sauce he prefers and roll tires down ramps.
This method will allow him to learn how to spell “IT”, provide suitable
time to catch one of the sheep and have a well aged duck sauce.[/color]
