Offline Updates

Is there a published procedure to update/patch a SLES 11 SP2 server, that does not have an internet connection?

Hi geralds34,

yes - see http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7010200 - “Update via using a SLE 11 SP2 installation media” (which is almost at the end of the page)

Regards,
Jens

Am I right in thinking that by “update/patch” you want to update your
server with all the patches for that OS version but not upgrade it to
SLES11 SP3 (as I think Jens has assumed)?

If so, unless you have a local SMT server (that itself is connected to
the Internet) you would need to download all the applicable patch files
from download.novell.com/patch/finder/#familyId=7261&productId=3642 ,
copy them all to your server, and then install them.

Hi
Further to Simon’s comment you can use YaST → create add on product to
produce an iso image that can be put onto a USB key to carry around
to the machine, copy the iso image and use YaST → Add on products to
create the local repository from the iso image to update from.

The add on product creator is nice to use, plus it has version control
so you can update/add patches/rpms over time.

Both.
I’d like to update from SP2 to SP3, and going forward I would like to keep the server as current as reasonable.

Most of my unix admin is from the AIX side, where IBM release fix packs, which contain hundred or more individual fixes. Makes it pretty easy to maintain a server that is not internet connected. Sounds like SLES is a little more involved to update.
