Question Concerning Driver Install for SLED11

Hello all!

What format do driver files need to be for installation from the F6
option in the boot screen? The options are “Yes” (which prompts for
media) “file” or “http” but I’m not sure what the actual driver files
need to be? are they rpm packages or .ko files or what?

Thanks!

Charles

Malcolm:

So, I’ve located this, which has what I need (specifically the network
drivers):

‘HP Compaq 8200 Elite: Installation Information’
(http://drivers.suse.com/hp/HP-Compaq-8200-Elite/sled11-sp1/install-readme.html)

And they note it allows for boot time install of the drivers; something
I am looking for since I use a network based install model. A quick
check of the file structure on the iso reveals it looks like it’s a
DUD/Add On disk. However I’m still unsure when this CD gets it’s chance
to load the drivers. The Drivers option at the Install screen doesn’t
prompt me for insertion of this media. Choosing “File” asks for file
names but, again, nothing is prompting for insertion of the CD. So, I
guess my question is, is it even possible to install these network
drivers early enough in the install process to allow for the install
media and the autoyast file to be pulled from a network share?

Any help is much appreciated!

Hi
The actual rpm’s are here;
http://drivers.suse.com/hp/HP-Compaq-8200-Elite/sled11-sp1/install/suse/x86_64/

You can unpack the intel-e1000e-kmp rpm and use the ko files to add.

Are you sure the default SP1 kernel won’t support the card?

So, I’ve located the driver update iso, created a CD and followed the
below instructions for installing the updates at boot:

‘Driver Kit Usage’ (http://drivers.suse.com/doc/kit_usage.html)

putting dud=1 on the boot options line does give me a prompt… which
spins up the CD drive then continues to prompt me. Anyone had any
success doing this sort of thing with SLED11? Just want to make sure it
actually works before I continue beating my head against this wall…

Your subject header says SLED11. Are you actually using SLED11 or is it
SLED11 SP1? (No one should be using SLED 11 by now given it’s end of
life, but occasionally people pst who still are.)

I sounds like you’re in the same, or at least similar, position I was a
while back. You’re trying to do an install with AutoYaST that requires
networking but your network card isn’t supported out of the box. Is that
right?

I do network installs with AutoYaST plus PXE boot. The way I got around
this situation was to update the initrd file that’s used for PXE boot so
it contains the new network driver. I wrote up how I did it at ‘Update a
driver in an initrd file, 29/06/11, Mike’s blag’
(http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/mikewillis/entry/update_the_e1000e/)

If you’re booting from optical media you could make your own DVDCD with
the new initrd file in.

Your mention your AutoYAST profile is retrieved over the network? Are
the packages too are they installed off the DVD? If you’re installing
packages from the DVD you’d have to re-burn the entire DVD with your new
initrd file. If you’re not using packages from the DVD you can make a
small boot CD with the new initrd and use that instead (which is what I
do as a back up to PXE boot).

Hello Malcolm!

Thank you for the rpm location. Yes, I am fairly certain the drivers on
the DVD do not support the card on the ELite8200. However, I was able to
add the drivers from the Novell Driver Update after installing a ‘deaf’
SLED11SP1 system and got the network up and running. So there is hope.

Mike (next thread down…) directed me to a fix that should work
perfectly. I had considered updating the SLED11SP1 DVD with the new
drivers but didn’t know where to start. This little blog entry will help
tremendously.

Thank you, again, for all your help. I hope one day to be at a point
where I can help answer some board questions!

Faaaaaantastic! Yes, this is exactly what I am trying to accomplish!
Thank you, Mike!

And, this is for SLED11SP1. Apologies for leaving that out.

Taking a stab at updating the iso…

Hi
You should look at http://susestudio.com, you can build an iso image
and upload your own rpms etc they have SLE SP1 images available.
