We are using a SLES VM (VMware) and are trying to increase the RAM on a system. We currently have 980GB of RAM and are trying to add an additional 380GB. When trying to do so in vCenter, we are not allowed to increase it above 1TB. We checked and we are using ESX 6.0 (update 2) and were told it supports up to 4TB. Where can I determine what the max amount of RAM allowed with SLES 11 SP3?
Hi
The release notes… if it’s x86_64 then, certified for 16 TIB

I have customers running 2 TiB on SLES boxes; you should be fine. If you
CANNOT change it higher, meaning VMware is not letting you, then probably
check with them. If no more than that shows up when booting, then that’s
kind of weird. How are you determining the amount there?

Good luck.

Thanks. Is there a way to confirm that there’s nothing limiting the max RAM allowed? In the OS or even the BIOS?
In the OS: there isn’t; the kernel supports tons of RAM, and there is
no-longer a separate installation for “big-smp” systems with lots of RAM,
or for x86_64 system separately from x86_32 systems with lots of RAM.
The BIOS is virtual, so check with your virtualization provider (VMware I
think you said).
