xconsole is an actual x session. It says “xconsole” in the upper

is installed. It is purple and if I left click, I get a menu that
allows me to launch xterm to issue commands. I can also exit the
xconsole and return to a command-prompt-only session. If I run
startx from there, it just restarts xconsole.
OK, if you logout and get back to the KDM login screen, there should be
a dropdown to select a session? You may need to enter or click on your
user name first. Then select the KDE session and try logging in.
