Hello, was this ever solved? I’m having the same problem running the
latest SLES 11 on VMWare. VNC in gives a gray screen. Local console
shows green screen but no login.

It appears to me that with the latest SLES 11 SP1 updates I am not
seeing this problem any more. Before that what I was doing was
switching to runlevel 3 when I left the host for a while. When I needed
to get to the GUI I would switch to runlevel 5. I used the commands
mentioned earlier in this thread.
