So after long last I purchased SLED for personal use. I wanted a decent RPM distro that would stand the test of time in terms of support. Currently I intend to continue purchasing it.
One big, big complaint though. I understand its a desktop but there seems to be no way to install unsupported versions of server based products. This is a legitimate desktop need in that often people develop directly off the desktop.
My solution to this was first mapping an Open-SuSe repo that was similar but after having a look at what it wanted to install I was like “no way” this will be a full on mismatch.
So I simply got hold of a SLES iso and mapped that to repo. Now I have unsupported, unpatched versions of server software. This is fine as im only using it for development purposes but its kinda clunky having a 2 Gig iso sitting on my hdd just so I can do dev.
It would be good if SuSe could provide unpatched repos or some kind of solution for this legitimate business need. Frankly Id prefer paying the same money for an 8 year supported version of Open SuSe where there is no divide between desktop and server. Being a Linux guy paying for a very nicely polished desktop its kinda odd that I can’t simply install apache. Specially given that other Linux desktop solutions are increasing their support period.
The ideal would be for you guys to provide -
A free SLES repo for SLED customers that was back reved a year so we could use localhost server demons
Or even better, a unsupported beta repo with bleeding edge demons that “fit in” with dependencies on SLED
Or seriously getting behind fully ever greening an Open SuSe release and taking money off people to do just that - providing “patching only” and bug fix support.
Maybe there is a solution out there?
I just want to run server based products on desktop for personal/home use. I understand SuSe wanting to keep hold of their intellectual property but please understand, I do NOT want SUPPORTED tried and tested enterprise ready server based products on desktop. I just want to use the linux desktop like I would under Open SuSe.
Forums are community support, they are not an official means of contacting SUSE. I was going to suggest you submit an Enhancement Request, but I’ve just spent the last ten minutes failing to work out how that can be done now. Online documentation for SLED refers to https://www.suse.com/support/ but I can’t find anything there about Enhancement Requests. The top search result for Enhancement Request is on novell.com and their portal doesn’t list SLED. (It used to, back when SLED was a Novell product.) Anyway…
You don’t say which version of SLED you are using. SLED 11 SP3 and SLED 12 are both currently support products but quite different from each other. If you are using SLED 11 SP3 then apache is included in the relevant SDK. For a handy list of links to SDK isos see https://forums.suse.com/content.php?121-SUSE-Linux-Enterprise-SDK-downloads They can also be found via https://download.suse.com/ and on SLED 12 you can enable the SDK repos via SUSE Customer Centre. Apache is not included in the SDK for SLED 12 but unofficial unsupported package can be found at http://software.opensuse.org/package/apache2 You may find other packages you want at http://software.opensuse.org/find - click the spanner icon to select a distribution.
openSUSE and SLED are different products for different use cases with different target markets. You could run an openSUSE in a Virtual Machine
Thanks for the reply. I am using SLED 12. Hey - I have to say its so slick :). I’m really loving it. I dicked around compiling my printer driver from source, utorrent, and a few open vpn scripts (hate network manager and wont sell my soul to that) and what not but over all its so awesome.
I was actually reaching out for community support as I would presume others might be in my category & I saw a few misguided answers to “just add an open suse repo to your SLED” install from other sites. Ouch! Tried that! Don’t do it

This is true… but I suspect there is also a neiche for extended paid evergreen support within Open SuSe supported in terms of patches by SuSe I suspect - not the same extent as SLED support of coarse. Seriously who wants an OS that lasts 2 years? I like setting up a desktop once, and not having it slow down (Linux does this) and having it patched for a long time (SLED, Windows does this). But at the same time don’t want closed source restrictions. Would be wonderful if Open SuSe provided this for a price. Im not saying for all versions but pick one for each major release. Competitors do it.
Thanks for the open suse links - but the stuff isn’t really compatible with SLED. Which version “alignes” with SLED 12 - non really from what i’ve seen. Sure, i’ve chucked on htop and other simple basic rpms from open suse. But id like one that fully integrates in with in system d and the overall OS - so SLED “knows” about it properly and I can chuck on a full lamp stack for example, albeit an unsupported, un patched version. Im not running an open SuSe VM so I can run apache or Lamp stack chucking the SLES iso on repo has less over head than that.
Hey, but thanks a lot for your reply. Aside from this “licensing” issue the most painless Linux desktop install i’ve ever done. Its rock solid stable. So frustrating that its almost everything I want.

However I just followed the link from the previous post post and realised it doesn’t show all the packages, just the one for openSUSE 13.2. If look under the big green button marked ‘Direct Install’ there’s a very non-obvious light grey on white link ‘Show other versions’

I also wouldn’t advise adding and enabling SLES-related repos on
SLED as that’s unsupported by SUSE - you have bought a supported
OS in SLED. If you want to develop for SLES I’d suggest
installing SLES in a VM and keep your SLED and SLES installs
separate.
