SLED11-SP1

Hello, All:

I’ve just inherited a SLED11-SP1 system and I’m attempting to update the one of the installed packages - MozillaFirefox. However, I’m afraid that I’m not understanding zypper properly:
genesco1:~ # zypper search Firefox
Refreshing service ‘nu_novell_com’.

Reading installed packages…

Nothing to do.
The user wants Mozilla Firefox upgraded from Version 10.0.6 to Version 31.3.0 but Zypper seems to be telling me that there is not an upgrade available.

Am I understanding that correctly?

Try:

sudo zypper lp #short for list-patches

With that said, while the current versions of SLED likely have a
more-current version of Firefox, SLED 11 SP1 is really, really old, so I
would not guess that it will have much newer. Still, who knows.

Something like the following may patch just Firefox:

sudo zypper patch MozillaFirefox

Good luck.

If you use the “-s” parameter with “zypper search” it will show versions
too - “zypper search -s Firefox”.

Since you’re using SLED11 SP1 which is no longer supported as it has
been superseded by later versions - SLES11 is now at SP4 - it’s not
surprising you’re not seeing a later version. Using the “-s” parameter
when searching will list the versions installed and available.

It may also be that your system is no longer registered with SUSE so
check that too.

Thank you, both:

The SLED11-SP1 system is used to troubleshoot customer experience problems and, as the customer currently uses Mozilla Firefox 31.3.0 on SLED11-SP1 in their environment, we would like to configure the system to use Mozilla Firefox 31.3.0 on SLED11-SP1 in our environment.

Zypper displays quite a lot of information about updates and patches but none of them seems to be Version 31.3.0:

Is there some way that I can get more information about the various patches that are available? e.g., Is there one in particular that will update MozillaFirefox to the desired version (31.3.0)?

The latest I see for 11 SP1 is Firefox 10:
https://download.suse.com/Download?buildid=is2Uenkkb-I~

The latest on SLED 11 SP4 appear to be Firefox 38:
https://download.suse.com/Download?buildid=7iUXJE0Fldk~

Also available from last year’s patches on SLED 11 SP4 is Firefox 31:
https://download.suse.com/Download?buildid=evKWUeOI2d0~

You could always try to apply those packages directly to your older
system, but you really should patch to get a lot of other security fixes too.

Good luck.

Though note you would not be supported by SUSE but then SLED11 SP1 is
already unsupported.

Thanks, ab!

Is there some way to upgrade to SP4 without going past Firefox 31?

Probably not unless you back-rev Firefox manually, or do an upgrade
locking the Firefox package.

Good luck.

Yes. But I’d have to upgrade Firefox to Firefox-31 before locking it.

It’s the classic Chicken-and-Egg dilemma - Doh!

Probably, but you can get that from the repositories, or Patch Finder
script ( https://download.suse.com/patch/finder ) which you can apply
before or after the SP. Keep in mind that even with a locked package,
other system changes may break the software managed by the package
(Mozilla FireFox in your case) after prompting you to resolve the conflict
somehow.

Good luck.

Since you’re on SLED11 SP1 you’ll first need to upgrade to SLES11 SP2
and then to SLED11 SP3 before you can get to SLED11 SP4.

Upgrading to SLED11 SP2 with updates will give you Firefox ESR 17 but
updates for both SLED11 SP3 and SLED11 SP4 would get you Firefox ESR 38
that you don’t want. I’d therefore suggest upgrading to SLED11 SP2 but
before upgrading to SLED11 SP3 and SLED11 SP4 you lock the
MozillaFirefox package. You’d then need to install the latest Firefox
ESR 31 update for SLED11 SP3 before then upgrading to SLED11 SP4.

Oh you may also need to lock mozilla-nspr and mozilla-nss as they may be
linked.

I’ve done some checking in SUSE’s Patch Finder and see that Firefox ESR
31 was available for SLED11 SP4 before version 38 came along.

The following are links to the Mozilla Firefox 31 packages available in

That seems very straight-forward, Simon! But I’m a complete noob to zypper and SuSE. So far I haven’t found any zypper tutorials that illustrate how to upgrade to a SP-level; how to lock packages, or; how to apply patches. :frowning: Can you point me in the direction of a good tutorial?
