Still miss Brainshare

I guess I am just feeling nostalgic, thinking of the good old days when
there was a Brainshare. I think that was the highlight of my career to
be able to go to SLC and spend a few days with people in the same field,
get some great hands on labs, and of course the cookies in the
developers lab. I was fortunate enough to attend a number of
conferences and enjoyed every one of them. I felt that there was a
common bond that we all shared with one another, not to say being able
to meet people from all over the world. Alas, those days are gone and
for me so are the days of training and conferences in lieu of books and
“free” events.

In short, thank you Novell! Is has been a journey and a great ride, but
not over yet.

Me too.

We’re a big company and there are a lot of events:
https://www.microfocus.com/resources/events/

Perhaps the Micro Focus Universe may take over the role BrainShare once had:
https://www.mfuniverse-emea.com/ehome/200175170 I dunno. There’s still a lot
of merging / consolidation going on because of the MF/HPEs merger and we’re far
from having the dust settle there. I hope once it settles and the big things
like merging customer databases, web sites, support offerings is complete,
we’ll have a BrainShare / SUSEcon like conference where we can all meet up
again.

Would be nice to have something that moves around the world…or at
least something near this area at least once

Some of us have never had a chance to attend a Brainshare :frowning:

We have some great facilities for such events and some lovely weather
here in Melbourne… World class events (e.g. Grand Prix, Australian
Open, ICC T20 in 2020, PAX, etc), so there’s no excuse :stuck_out_tongue: We’ve had
Peter Sianchuk and Michael Mychalczuk come down for a visit with Tom
Burt planning one…

And not the least reason, its easier for ‘Ed’
(https://forums.novell.com/member.php/5862-edmaa) and myself to attend

I only made it to two of them, but they were definitely worth it.

They tried that with BrainShare and it wasn’t terribly successful. The great
thing about BrainShare in SLC, UT, USA was that it was 45 miles away from
Novell’s corporate HQ so the pool of expertise we were able to throw into the
conference was vast. Not so when it was in far away locations. Kind of
expensive and difficult to send 5000 employees to Melbourne. You should have
come to SLC. A number of folks from Australia and as far away as South Africa
would come. It was a great conference in it’s day.

Yep. My first one was on the university campus. We went from classroom
to classroom for our seminars. Then we migrated over to the palace.
Definitely learned a lot every time I went. Met good people, shared
ideas and issues. Extremely well organized. Very efficient. Never
made me doubt the cost.

Same here. I went, I think, every year from 1994 until the last one
(2011, I think?) plus one in Barcelona.

Always worth the time for me, even though I didn’t always attend sessions

State Government…they wouldn’t even pay for an inter-state “thing” let
alone an international one…

AU itself is pretty tight around this kind of thing…too many bad
eggs in the past have spoilt it for the rest of us by ‘rorting’
(https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/rort) it previously.

ScorpionSting sounds like they ‘said’:

So my response to ScorpionSting’s comment is…
