SUSE Manager Management Pack for Microsoft System Center

I am in the process to find out the best way to patch over a dozen of SLES11 SP3 (SLES 11 SP3 for VMware), I came across two native tools:

  1. SUE SMT
  2. SUSE Manger

My understanding the SMT is to setup and it work for small organisation and we will get this free if you have a support with Novell.

Looking at SUSE Manage comes with many features and you need to kind of justify it to use them, but SUSE released the SUSE Manager Management Pack for Microsoft System Center 2012 and gets very interesting.

I have the following questions:

  1. Can SUSE Manager patch VMware Machine (SLES 11 SP3 for VMware) running on the ESXi hosts?
  2. Can SUSE Manager patch VMware Machine (Open SUSE 12) running on the ESXi hosts?
  3. Some documentation around SUSE Manager Management Pack for Microsoft System Center 2012?

Can you please share your experience if you have SUSE Manager or SMT or SUSE Manager Management Pack for Microsoft System Center 2012 to patch your environment ?

Thank you in advance.

Sorry that I don’t have any information for you, but am interested to know if you learned anything since this post? I’m looking for an alternative to SMT and am looking at Suse Manager, Spacewalk and Suse Manager Management Pack for SCCM. Has anyone reading implemented any of these?

SUSE Manager should be your tool of choice for package & update management for Linux (SLES, SLED, RHEL) systems. It supports physical and virtual deployments of Linux systems, no matter which underlying virtualization technology (xen, kvm, vmware, hyper-v, azure, ec2, openstack, …) is used.

It is possible to manage openSUSE systems. See https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/systemsmanagement:spacewalk and its various sub-projects for community-supported (!) client packages.

An overview about the Management Pack is available at https://www.suse.com/products/suse-manager/management-pack.html.
