Set up a 2 node cluster today with SLES 11 HAE pack.
Pretty interesting stuff. Currently just fails over
a running apache instance. Going to try and figure out
using DRDB next. SLES docs are pretty good if a bit
sparse on details.
sparse details makes it more fun right??
maybe Novell are preparing for a microsoft takeover and are adjusting
their doco standards to align with microsoft best practice??
ie giving you half of everything you need…

I don’t suppose you’d consider modifying it for SLES and creating a
Cool Solution? I think a lot of people would find it very helpful.

I have to see if I can get a download of SLES to use
I have not logged into the Novell site in years.

It’s kinda funny really. People treat HA like it’s some sort of black art,
which it really needn’t be, it would just reduce consulting fees if it
wasn’t. In the same way IBM’s virtualization took 50 years to be
popularized, so will HA be someday when someone decides to take it to the
masses. It’s getting there, just a bit too cryptic at this point.
Fortunately I have my Captain Crunch Decoder Wheel™.
Thanks Lance, I’ll check it out.
Any info is good since there is such
a dearth of well written materials.

Looking at a SLES install it shows how long it has been since I
installed sles.
Do you want a from empty machine or just the drbd part of this?

What I would like to see is a from empty but with some descriptions as
to what the paramaters are for/doing. That is kind of elusive, there are
plenty of things outlining RA’s for example but no practical examples.
It has taken me far longer to get just basic things working than I think it
should. I feel like I am recreating the wheel, and I know in the end
someone will be like, “Well why didin’t you just do this…”
There is a DRDB plugin in YaST if you install the HAE package.
Pretty sure I can decipher what you do via CLI and input it into the GUI.

I don’t see any point in going through a basic install. I assume anyone
interested is drbd can handle that. What I like about the Cool
Solutions is they always include a few pointers and tips that are not
obvious from reading the documentation.
This would be -your- project, drawing from -your- experiences. It’s
pretty much up to you how little or how much you would like to include.

Yes and no. That is the problem with most installation documentation.
There is this assumption that someone will ‘figure it out’ but no real
attempt at developing understanding of what the installation is doing.
For instance, with the YaST wizard for Cluster settings there is a tab for
cluster security. The ‘Help’ button blathers on about what Threads are,
what the capabilites are of the authkey being generated is and the
documentation simply outlines the fact that you can set threads and authkeys
for cluster security. However, what is left out is, What aspect of security
is it talking about? Is this the low level communication used by heartbeat,
pacemaker or what? It is unclear. That is where an installation doc
could point out WHAT it is that you are configuring, why it’s important and
possibly a best practice.
Everyone likes a quick and dirty explanation but occasionally in depth
detail is very much desired and warranted.
Lance,
Is it done yet? - - Not to be pushy, but the DRBD for SLES would
be “waaayyy cooool!”.
And if it’s done - where in the “link” can one find it?
