updating a lot of packages broke system in many places

Hello,

after updating a lot of pending packages on my hp 625 with SLED11sp1 I
have the following symptoms:

  • Touchpad settings are not obeyed: Although I have set high sensitivty
(speed), the mouse speed is normal (low).
  • automounting of CDs and USB sticks fails with “IsUserPrivileged()
    failed”
  • only option to leave the system is shutdown (reboot is grayed out,
hibernate and suspend don’t even appear) Pressing the power button
doesn’t do anything, I have to shutdown with the menu.
  • I havent looked what might be also different from before…

I don’t really know where to start looking…I probably don’t give
enough information for you to post a solution, so please help me
investigating further…

I guess this means that zypper thinks there is only one update
pending.

However, when I use the graphical frontend for updating packages, it
proposes:
sledsp1-a2ps (as above)
sledsp1-bytefx-data-mysql (security)
sledsp1-gdm (recommmended)
sledsp1-gnome-control-center (recommended)

When I try to install them all, it wants to remove mono-winforms but
gets error message
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM fehlgeschlagen: error: package
mono-winforms-2.0.1-1.26.1.i586 is not installed
I have had this particular error message since day 1 of this computer
(which is the cause why all other updates weren’t installed until I
recently used the package manager to do this)
I have this message even when I only try to install the a2ps.

Do you have any idea how to fix all this??

P.S.
After writing my first post, I observed that I drop to the welcome
screen when i choose to shutdown the computer, where i can suspend,
relogin, shutdown or reboot, but not hibernate. Before, I had the choice
right after pressing the power button between shutdown, suspend,
hibernate and reboot without having to go through the login screen.

Hi
OK, lets see if it’s available;

If it is then, see where it’s from;

What if you skip (as in uncheck) the aps update for the moment, does it
add the additional updates?

Hi,

it seems there is mono-winforms actually installed, but the system
tries to remove a different version (2.0.1-1.26.1.i586) which is not

I accidentally have run the aps update, so now I get

Code:

→ the other updates dont show up in zypper.

Also, I cannot access the AMD Catalyst Control Centre any more?

Hi
OK, you may need to rebuild the rpm database;

rpm --rebuilddb

Then go into YaST software management and search on mono-winforms and
then on the version tab select the older version 2.0.1-1.26.1.i586 and
install that. Then try a zypper update, if that works, then try the
YaST way.

Hi and thank you,

downgrading mono-winforms, then upgrading did the trick to a consistent
package database, it seems. For some reason, I am now also allowed to
change mouse sensitivity.

Mounting volumes in gnome as non-root user still does not work, same as
ATI control center. Is it possible that some update to standard policies
accidentally removed the rights to do so? I remember I had the same
problem with suse 11.2 and never got around to fixing this (nor did I
find any solutions on the internet).

Hi
So what type of volumes are we talking about? is the gvfs daemon
running? Check in the Control Center startup applications to ensure the
mount process is running.

I have tried: usb sticks, sd cards, optical disks, hard drive partitions
(recovery partition). All of which used to be mountable from within
nautilus as a user. I still can mount them in the console as root. But
upon inserting one of the removable media, I get a window translated
roughly into: “Volume cannnot be mounted”. IsCallerPrivileged() failed.
So there seems to be some notification. I also tried KDE4 with same
results (error message: IsCallerPrivileged() failed).

The gvsd is there, it seems, but I have seen nothing in the startup

I also checked the following:

created a new user: same problems: power button is not recognized,
mounting from within nautilus does not work

using KDE4: power button is working (and powers off directly instead of
going to the login screen), but mounting also does not work.

Maybe it would be the easiest way to do a recover and start with a
fresh install? (any hints as to what to backup before? user data should
still be there as this is a different partition, right?) is there an
easy way to get a list of installed applications so that I can reinstall
them after recovery?

Hi
It’s mainly any of the existing config files in your home directory
that may cause some issues if you re-install.

I would use dd to copy the home partition off to an external storage
device if you can. Else you should be able to show hidden files and
drag/drop to an external storage device.

What is your recovery method, just a re-install from the DVD, or is it
image recovery software?

I have an hp625 notebook which has a recovery partition and a
corresponding boot menu entry. I never dared to see what happens when I
select it. /home is on a different partition than root, so it should be
safe from the recovery (although I will make a backup of that to be
sure). Do you know if I can still register and get updates from the
novell servers although the 90 days from purchase are over by now? If
not, can I download them before the recovery?

Cheers and merry christmas

It’s mainly any of the existing config files in your home directory
that may cause some issues if you re-install.

I would use dd to copy the home partition off to an external storage
device if you can. Else you should be able to show hidden files and
drag/drop to an external storage device.

What is your recovery method, just a re-install from the DVD, or is it
image recovery software?

I have an hp625 notebook which has a recovery partition and a
corresponding boot menu entry. I never dared to see what happens when
I select it. /home is on a different partition than root, so it
should be safe from the recovery (although I will make a backup of
that to be sure). Do you know if I can still register and get updates
from the novell servers although the 90 days from purchase are over
by now? If not, can I download them before the recovery?

Cheers and merry christmas

Hi
So was it pre-installed with SLED? If so it should restore and add the
update repositories as it’s purchased with at least 1yr of access to
updates…

For sure make sure you back up your /home data, you never know… also
don’t forget to check the data on the backup media!

I did the recovery. Then let yast install updates for itself. after that
the update application from yast would no longer work complaining about
the gtk-plugin missing. So I reverted to zypper which downloaded and
updated 1GB of packages. 2hrs later and after a reboot my mouse/touchpad
is no longer there. Tried the “failsafe” option. Now the mouse cursor is
“only” invisible. How can I get it back!?

Hi
Are the HP repositories active, you may need to re-register the system.

Hi
Are the HP repositories active, you may need to re-register the
system.

As I don’t have a license number, I just pressed enter on the
respective screen. And it seems the ncc-services are used.

After I learned that the invisible mouse cursor might be a graphics
driver issue, I installed the driver from the AMD home page. That
helped.
Also, my problems from before are gone :)))

Unfortunately, I realised that my wireless card doesn’t work.

I installed all of the following packages from the broadcomm
repository:
broadcomm-wireless
-kmp-default
-kmp-pae
-lmp-xen

After that, I learned that different drivers may be bad, so I
uninstalled all of them.
Now I have installed broadcomm-wireless and
broadcomm-wireless-kmp-default again, but in network manager, only the
cabled network section is shown.

Also,I just discovered that the system still knows about my old
(deactivated) repositories. I thought that after recovery, they should
be gone?

Also, I now have two boot menu entries
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP1 - 2.6.32.49-0.3
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 - 2.6.32.49-0.3 (this is the default)
Should I stick to the default? I don’t see a difference between the two
(except for the SP1 Text, of course)

Cheers,
Til

Hi
OK, can you start a new thread about your wireless after a read here,
the first 3 stickies and post the required information;
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/wireless/

If you look at the file /boot/grub/menu.lst are the first two entries
the same?

ok, the second one load a kernel with the same version number, but ends
on -pae. I only have 1 GB of memory (256MB of which takes the graphics
chip, unfortunately). So I guess, I am better off with the default
kernel instead of the pae, right?
