Upgrade SLES from 11 Sp1 to 11 Sp3.

Hi Guys,

Currently we are running the following SLES server:
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64)
VERSION = 11
PATCHLEVEL = 1

Our business is planning to upgrade to the latest available version of SLES, which is SLES11 Sp3.
Will this upgrade be easy, just like patching or are there any steps involved that I need to look into before performing the upgrade?

Could you guys please also point me to a step by step documentation that will me perform his upgrade?

It says:

There is no supported direct migration path to SLES/SLED 11 SP3. An update hast to be performed from SLES/SLED 11 GA to SP 1, then further to SP 2 by using the respective boot media.

If you follow the instructions it should be fairly easy. Any major upgrade carries risk though and the risks depend in part in how you’ve got the server configured and what’s running on it. Do the usual things like making sure you know how everything that’s running on the server works, how to check it’s still working after the update, that any important data on the server is backed up and that you have a plan on how to handle things in the event something breaks. If you’ve got any third party software on there check it’s documentation regarding SLES 11 SP3.
