I have just upgraded a workstation from SLED12 SP4 to SLED15 SP1 by doing a clean install in the / partition.
I am unable to get VMWare Player 15.5.6 to install correctly. On first run I get the message:
‘Before you can run VMWare, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.’
This is normal behaviour I think. On clicking install though I get the error message:
‘Unable to install all modules. See log /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-2270.log for details. (Exit code 1)’
I have the kernel-source and the kernel-devel installed and am now at a loss. I had no issues on SLED12 SP4. Can anyone advise?
Thanks
Hi
You will need to look through the log indicated and see what the error(s) actually are. I’m assuming the system is all up to date, latest kernel etc? Have you restarted the system to ensure the running kernel and installed sources/development files match?
Yes all up to date and restarted. The only thing in the log that looks like an issue is:

Hi
Hmmm, no troubles here with the 15.5.6 version

I can get to that point OK. It is when I try to run for the first time that the problems begin.
Hi
Ahh OK, so are the following installed?
kernel-default-devel kernel-devel kernel-macros libelf-devel
With those installed, ran vmware player, entered root password, modules built, application started up etc.
They are all installed, according to yast2.
Attached is file giving result of:
zypper se <packagename>
All show as installed.
Hi
The only thing I see different in the process is vmware service running. Can you ensure the vmware service is all stopped, then as your user run vmware player, enter root password to let it build the modules and see if that helps.
I’ve attached my log for comparison…
Hi
I see there was a kernel update today as well… Linux big-bird 4.12.14-197.45-default #1 SMP Thu Jun 4 11:06:04 UTC 2020 (2b6c749) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
This is resolved. It seemed to be an issue with how I elevated to root to perform the install. The installer was downloaded into a user’s Download folder and then I went su in that folder to do the install. It seem I need to use su - and then all was well.
Thanks for your time in assisting with this.
I use KVM from SUSE. This works really good, fast and reliable.
But, since SLED 15 it is not part of the package. (only in SLES) But you can find it in openSuse. You need to add opensuse repositories. i placed them on priority 100, so they do not get picked automatically but only if SLE do not have the file.
https://software.opensuse.org/package/virt-manager - you need this virtmanager and it need to run.
But, when installed, it works really good
