Windows 8 IS an app store.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this statement since
it is sort of my thinking on MS direction with it.

Probably fairly accurate. W8 was never intended to make strides into the
(pretty saturated) desktop space - it is going head to head with tablet
OSen such as android and ios. I am fully expecting osx to turn into a
appstore-only ios clone sometime in the future too.

I note also with interest that the entry level (free) MS compiler is
dropping the ability to create desktop applications entirely (that will
be a paid-only feature) to concentrate on making metro apps - clearly,
MS trying to encourage takeup, but I suspect that will backfire.

Without a doubt.

My guess is that it will become the default interface, but will not
disable the classic mode. One of the strengths of OSX is how it scales
from the power user who wants a unix like command line to the user that
just clicks the app in the dock and does the one thing they do. Windows
also has this powerful back end, but I can’t wrap my head around Metro
on the desktop yet.

However, with how little thought the average user is putting into
computer operation these days, I’m not sure its a bad thing. We (still)
have folks that can’t find applications they use daily if their desktop
shortcuts go missing… The start orb is just too nebulous of a concept
for them. A tile of icons or boxes kind of takes care of this.

I also think the app store model is a great for the smaller developer.
Long run it won’t be a consumer win (pricing) nor matter much for the
big guys (many sales channels) but for a small shop with a good product,
it enables access to a market that would be otherwise limited.
