Windows 8

I’m not particularly fond of Windows 8, but I don’t think it’s any worse
than Windows 7 … or XP … or 2000. It’s just different for the sake
of being different, and we ought to be used to that by now.

Yep. Initially I missed the start button, but honestly after awhile I
realized I really don’t need it. When it does come back in 8.1 I have a
feeling it’s not going to be what everyone thinks it’s going to be and
they’ll still be miffed. There are some nifty right click options
on it though, be sure to check those out. You’ll also be able to boot
straight to desktop if that’s your thing. Right click on the taskbar
go to properties. There’s a new Tab in there.

It’ll only be un-missed by those who somehow have windows eight and have
managed to get used to it. According to the people I’ve polled, that
means two people that I know (you and Kim) might possibly not-miss the
button. Some people missed Vista after seven came out too… there are
quirks in every crowd.

Good luck.

Call me quirky. Vista was rubbish.
I think I just decided to not let it annoy
me so I got past it.

Well, here’s a third. As a Linux user, I’ve not really had a “start”
button on my regular desktop since the late 90’s. I have Win8 Enterprise
in a VM, and I don’t miss having a start button. Might be a case where
Linux users again have the upper hand because of the difference in the UI
they’re used to.

I miss it…but not THAT much. If they put a SHUT DOWN button in it’s
place I’d miss it even less. (I’ve created my own)

I just suspend the VM, no shutdown button needed.

funny i’ve just been playing aroudn with win8 and a test SOE for the
last few days (it’s really quiet at the moment lol)

I personally think the interface of 8.0 is a dogs breakfast if you’re
used to just using the mouse to navigate the start menu, if you use the
windows key shortcuts it’s tolerable

I found this article on the MS website that lists several of the
shortcuts that give you easy access to parts of what used to be the
start menu but in metro UI:
‘New keyboard shortcuts for Windows 8 and Windows RT - Microsoft
Windows’
(http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/new-keyboard-shortcuts)

i’ve looked at 8.1 and it seems they have made the interface easier to
navigate, with the start screen getting an extra section where all your
apps are, kind of like the old start menu system, I think going from 7
to 8.1 will be a much easier transition for most users, still not
perfect but reasonable and more intuitive

just a shame that the preview release of 8.1 can’t create a catalog with
ENGL or the wsim tool (known issue with the preview release), however I
can say in my own testing with a 64 bit build that ZCM seems to behave
itself which is nice

LOL. I did that on a couple of machines because the user couldn’t figure out
how to shut it down…which, I can see their point. A lot of people
struggle to find the ‘charms’ bar.
