All I want to know is

Why after 20 years of internet, one
still cannot print a document and expect
it to contain all of the words on the page?

I get it, page margins, misc format issues, drivers blah blah blah.

Just print the $#$@%@ thing.

Yep, I hear you.

So my response to GofBorg’s comment is…

Printers are the bane of my work existence…

If I could only remove all printers. We’re getting better…printing
to PDF for lots of things. But still need that paper sometimes
unfortunately.

I feel your pain!

I’m pretty sure there is something universally evil about paper-killers.
All demons ever came to one conclusion and then thwarted progress on a
theme, and it’s taking us years to over come it.

In the IT world, the terrible inroads were in this marvelous new
technology called the “printer”, which could type so much faster than we
can, and kill trees in unheard-of amounts while simultaneously causing
baldness and flat-foreheadedness in IT professionals and lay people alike.

They (the demons) did not stop there, though; paper music (vs. the real
music portrayed on the paper) is an abomination as well, making
non-musical sounds when turned, requiring busy hands to be diverted for
their constant turning, and causing paper cuts, all while being too small
to hold appropriate markings and too large to be easily portable to a nice
electronic form (tablet computer).

Evil lurketh there… kill all printers.

Good luck.

I so envy you. We seem to add more printers every year, and not even
network ones, everyone here seems to think they need a printer at their
desk…sigh

I have 7 network printers and 2 local printers at my head office and 4
network printers at my remote office. Four of those network printers
are wide format (36") since we print drawings. But the printers
aren’t nearly as busy as they used to be and I think I could possibly
retire one of the network printers. Fortunately I have iPrint to
handle the network printers. And as of late last year, we now have
everyone on Windows 7, so I only have to maintain printer drivers for
one OS.

Very! Years ago I had Win95/98/ME and Win NT4/2000/XP. (The one
ME laptop was thanks to an employee making a rogue purchase… argh).
I had finally gotten everything down to just XP and then we had to
start implementing Win7 64bit to handle the very large models our
Architects and Engineers were working with. Now that we are Win7
64bit everywhere, we are sticking with that for a while. No need to
introduce Win8 here. And as time goes, I keep getting more
comfortable with Linux (mostly SLES/OES), so not a bad situation.

Glad to hear it. We were almost all XP and then started the win7 64bit
rollout (as well as VDI).

We’re down to ~100 XP machines now out of over 600 machines, so
hopefully we will not have 32bit desktop OS’s after this next PC
purchase.

Only thing I get to do w/ sles & oes anymore is Groupwise stuff, as we
were directed (by my boss, not TPTB) to bite the M$ bullet… :frowning:

Bummer. I keep M$ to a minimum in my server room. Our accounting
system requires a Windows Server, but other than that just about
everything else is linux. I do still have one Netware server humming
along. I’ll probably convert it to a virtual server once I finish my
VMware upgrades.

One good thing, the vast majority of my servers are virtual. I guess
that’s something I guess.

Amen, and printing a web page to PDF isn’t any better.
