Bluetooth is not working after updating the kernel

Hi,

I received a notification for a security alert to update the kernel and after I installed it the bluetooth doesn’t work

When I start Bluetooth application it says “your computer does not have any Bluetooth adapters plugged in”

And from the lspci -v output it seems that there is no kernel driver in use for the Bluetooth (the below output)

I’m not in front of a SLED machine right now but I was using USB Bluetooth do gle earlier on a fully updated a SLED 11SP3 machine.

Can you tell us what version of SLED you are using and the kernel version? If you’re not sure how run

$ cat /etc/*release* $ uname -a

Have you installed all outstanding updates?

Is this HP machine which shipped with SLED on it?

I’m using SLED 11 SP3 and the kernel is 3.0.93-0.8

There are no outstanding updates

And the machine is an HP one with SLED preinstalled on it. It was SLED11 SP2 and I upgraded it to SLED SP3

I beleive I did something wrong while update the kernel that might have deinstalled the bluetooth driver :frowning:

There may be a specific bluetooth driver for the HP, it may not be in
their repositories, hence it’s not working.

OK, if you open YaST Software Management, then top left in the
dropdown, select ‘repositories’ in the list below, can you select
SLED11-SP3-HP-BNB-Updates. Now in the right hand panel shows all the
rpm’s available. Is there a bluetooth one in there?

I can’t select SLED11-SP3-HP-BNB-Updates! It instantly disappears from that list so does this mean that there are no packages available on that repo?

When I search for rt3290 I find the below package but I believe before the last kernel update I had another one with default or something that I can’t find any more so I must have accidentally de-installed that one!

And now can’t find it! Shall I try to locate it in SP2-HP-BNB-Updates repo?

This will show which repository it came from, also is the module loaded?

lsmod |grep rt

If it isn’t try a modprobe on it;

modprobe rt3290

directory is there a file called rt3290? What about a Function key+ Fn
key to press for wireless, sometimes they turn on wireless, then press
for bluetooth and press again for both…

The device is seen, but no kernel module…

Yes, there is. check the below output

I have a separate key for that but it toggles the wireless ON and OFF only

so how to assign that kernel module?

it is running, check the below output

The output of dmesg is too long and got an error while trying to post it here so what I should look for

output is there any mention of the word - firmware.

Sorry for coming back on this, I had other more important issues to take care of so anyway when I do:

dmesg |grep firmware

It doesn’t return anything so am I using the correct command syntax?

There have been some kernel updates, your system is all up to date
still?

Can you also install the rfkill package from my home repository here
and run that (as root user);
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/malcolmlewis:/SLE_11_SPn_General/SLE_11_SP3/x86_64/rfkill-0.5-4.1.x86_64.rpm

rfkill list
