Cannot Access SUSE 11sp2 from WIN XP

New Install of SLES 11 sp2

I am an experienced in Netware 3x through 6.5 user forced onto Linux because of Novell dropping Netware I have very little experience with Linux so please accept my apologies ahead of time.

I have tried to ad E-directory with the Novell install and tried configuring SAMBA so I can access the file system from a WIN XP station NO JOY.

I can see the Shares but LOGIN fails. I will gladly give remote access if I can, to any qualified tech that can get this working.

Thanks in advance.

Where did you add eDirectory from? Via Novell’s Open Enterprise Server
(OES) product or a separate download of eDirectory.

If you want an eDirectory-enabled version of Samba I think you’ll need OES
(separately licensed) otherwise you can configure Samba to use built-in
SLES users. OES is Novell’s Linux-based replacement for NetWare.

You might want to consider OES 11 instead of plain SLES since you know
Netware. I really liked Netware. But I have found that managing OES
11 is actually very similar to Netware. There are some exceptions,
such as patching, but a lot of the mgmt tools remain the same. The
users can’t tell the difference.

Ken

Sorry, It is OES 11. I downloaded the addon package separately not realizing I did not have it in the first download. I am not even sure I got E- Directory to install. Honestly if OES 11 looks looks like Netware I can’t tell it, and I don’t see any management tools that make it look anything like Netware at all. A Novel engineer ( who has no Netware experience ) had full access to the server twice and had no success with it.

I downloaded this package first.
SLES-11-SP2-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD1.iso then this one OES11-SP1-addon-x86_64-CD1.iso Guess I should have grabbed the complete package the first time, but it was not clear to me that I needed that package to get E-DIR. etc. And although I have attempted to install the Addon package, with YAST, I feel like a newbie because I am looking at something totally unfamiliar.

The system is a new install with nothing on it so from whst you are telling me, I am going to blow it away this weekend and download the entire version with addons and re-install and after I see all the options I need if I am still having Issues I will check back for help.

Thanks for responding

Check the sticky post in the OES Linux forums for additional resources.
Be sure to read he documentation. Don’t change the default SLES
components and be sure to install OES as an “add-on”. The full OES/SLES
DVD is a little easier to install but the separate media should be just
as good.

Make sure your system is registered with NCC after you complete the
installation and that you apply outstanding patches. Check the
knowledgebase for any relevant TID’s.

David,

Not sure why you were setting up SAMBA. Wouldn’t be needed with OES
for a standard install. Just create NSS volumes and your users can
access those the same as on NetWare. The install and patching will be
different. But managing the server - you still use iManager and NRM.
And if you run DNS and DHCP on OES, you can still use the same console
for managing them. OES and Netware aren’t identical, but there are
quite a few similarities.

Re-installed the whole thing from this distro OES11-SP1-addon-x86_64-CD1.iso so Set up EDIR and using Muliticast but I have to put in the IP address to login. The Tree does not show up. I can login and see SYS and below but I cannot see any other directories.

I can see the SAMBA Shares (Sharing /srv, /home and a couple of others) but login authentication fails. I left the authentication to the default settings. USER has root rights. security is not an issue for local users.

I am satisfied with Netware 6.5 but it does not support the versions of MYSQL and PHP I need to run Wordpress or Joomla. Which is the primary purpose of this Machine for A Non Profit Veterans Organization.

I don’t really care what login method I use as long as I can see all the directories. I can see the SYS and below when logging into e-dir, but I can not create additional directories under it at the server console using nautulis file browser, It says it’ is not a directory or that it does not exist.

I need to access the web server directories from a remote station in the same building and by either net storage or FTP so the web developer can work with it.

One clue that may help you assist me is, I get the same failure when I try to login to the Netware 6.5 servers using CIFs. It comes back with the name of the work station as: workstation/username in the username field. I get that same response with the three NW6.5 CIFS and the SAMBA server. Is there something I am forgetting that I need on the WIX XP pro station? User name and passwords are the same for work station and all servers.

Other issues are. Even though I am selecting MYSQL, PHP, Network Manager when I install, I find none of them when the server is finished installing all packages.

After using Online Update. I lose the Welcome Novell page with the management options and just get the “IT WORKS” HTML file When it did show, only 3 options were listed BTW iManager, Remote Manager and iMonitor. No Apache or MYSQL on the menu. What happened to PHPMYADM?

Thank you for your patience and help. I never had any trouble installing and using a Netware box from 3x to 6.5 including GW BM and DNS/DHCP

This animal is very configuration intensive and since I don’t know Linux it’s a challenge.
Thank you very much and Have a god day

David

Got back Welcome screen by removing / renaming index.html file in /srv/www/htdocs directory

I am seeing more what Novell has done with this as I read more forums, etc. I can now authenticate samba, had to enable Edir admin user for samba separtely but user does not have RW access to the directories, with If I understand now, giving RW to the Linux directories has to be done by the root user at the console. Is that right? Using ( # groupmod -A admin root ) Have not done that yet.

Am I on the right track?

A lot of things have to be in place to get everything working and I’m
not an expert in this area. There are some TID"s available that may
help. Have you checked the knowledgebase?

Here’s one that popped up,

Ive read till I’m blue in the face and have tried to follow instructions to the letter. I am an electrical controls engineer with a lot of machine control programming experience so I have a fair understanding of technical issues. If the entire set of configurations were packaged properly Linux would not be such a convoluted monkey. Way to much to configure… Seems to me Novell could have made this much easier if they incorporated the entire file system into e-directory. Between my friends and I we lost over 100 clients because of this stuff that were solid netware customers so I am loosing patience.

Netware, Choose packages, install, login… and USE IT. I was told by a novell linux tech support guy that they have very few netware people left there.

Sorry for the Vent… But it was overdue… I will refrain from anymore. Wish Novell would read it.

This doc is helpful for what I want in that it explains: “You can use the Novell Storage Services (NSS) file system or Linux file systems to host your Web content:” https://www.novell.com/documentation/oes11/web_services_lx/data/apache_prereq.html

I am adding this to the thread to help others find solutions to using the web server the same way we want to. "Don’t you all find it strange that a Novell Linux Engineer who had full access to our OES 11 server via Novells remote service could not give me any viable assistance to solve an access problem?

This should give pause to anyone thinking about paying Novell for support.

David,

I used CIFS as little as possible and I am not using SAMBA - don’t
know the first thing about it. I’m not sure how much I can help on
this, I’m still a bit new to the Linux side of things myself. But a
couple of thoughts…

  1. Since you are installing OES, you should probably post your
    questions in novell.support.open-enterprise-server.linux.install. This
    forum is specifically for SLES.

  2. If this server is only used as a web server and nothing else, it
may make more sense to just install SLES and not OES. Depends upon
whether you need any of the OES features.

  3. Make sure you are licensed properly. This one caught me off-guard
recently. If you are only licensed for OES, you need to purchase a
SLES license to install only SLES.

Regards,
Ken
