Been a good long while since I’ve posted in here but thought I’d see who
is still poking around.
Not sure how everyone is getting on in this modern IT world we now live
in. Pretty much seems to
suck most days. So it looks like MicroFocus has begun full assimilation
of Novell, dropping the time
honored name from most products and transitioning to the Micro Focus
label. I also see that Netware
is ending extended support. My server is still chugging along. Currently
at 408 days of uptime which coincides
with our last full blown black out.
So I am wondering those of you that have left Netware behind, which way
did you go…
Windows? SLES? OES Linux? or other?
Funny story, I did a pilot for moving to Windows for fileserver. I hated
it so much I abandoned it but I cannot
decide if OES has a real future. SLES or even RedHat are more obvious
choices but I often run into backup
software problems with Linux so I’m just not certain which way to go,
thus I am sitting on OES Netware still. None
of these options I fear are going to offer the no-muss, no-fuss
experience of Netware.

So my response to GofBorg’s comment is…
Whoa! Hey there G.
Still plugging along here (Wyoming, USA). We left Netware long ago
We eventually ended up running m$ AD, and now there’s been talk of
ditching Groupwise to become a full m$ shop…
We are still running Groupwise on sles boxes, which for the most part
seem pretty stable. We tried running DSFW for a while, just weren’t
able to do the things we wanted to do AD-wise, hence the ditching of
edir.
The captcha thingy is to try prevent spammers - which you are obviously
not - but your stats are showing 0 posts, thus flagging you as a new
user.
We left Netware behind in approximately 2008 - 2009 time frame. I
believe that OES has a strong future. My GroupWise and file systems are
all on NSS which gives you the power of file system security and
stability. I just love my OES servers They just run and run and run
and run…

Hey G!
Good to hear from you. I really liked Netware, had used it since the
3.x days. So I was concerned about the change to linux. But I have
been real pleased with OES 11 and now OES 2015. I’ve been using OES
11 for quite a few years and it has turned out to be a good
replacement for Netware. NSS is a great file system. I’m running
GroupWise on OES also. ZCM for managing workstations. I moved my
websites from Netware to SLES 11, but everything else is running on
OES. iPrint works well, but I’m moving from iPrint on OES to the
iPrint appliance. Essentially still a full Novell (Microfocus) shop
here.
Regarding backups… I am using Arkeia - which was a great product.
Still works for me. But Western Digital bought them and then killed
them about a year ago. I’ve heard great things about SEP www.sepusa.com Might be worth looking into. For now I’m still using
a combination of rsync and Arkeia. I need to eventually find a
different solution.
And I still access the forums via NNTP, so I don’t have to deal with
captchas.

Well this is my second post…LOL…still getting CAPTCHA’d…which is
really bad for me as I cannot normally read them.
My account got nuked back when NNTP got moved around. Somehow all my
accounts got shuffled around and eventually lost
during the Attachmate years.
And I still access the forums via NNTP, so I don’t have to deal with
captchas.
Ken
I haven’t been able to access Novell’s NNTP since 2014 or there about.
A traceroute to the server just dies. Of course these days I’m not even
sure
what the correct settings would be for NNTP. I used to have it hooked into
my
Novell account so it would display my name and avatar but that stopped
working and
then my account completely disappeared. I was shocked I was able to login
this
last time I tried.
Anyway, it all got to be a big problem and I was really busy at work so I
just gave
up on the forum. Nice to see everyone again…still getting CAPTCHA’s
Shaun Pond
in my “day job” I work for ENGL; our aim is to make Windows deployment
easy[/color]
Good luck with that…MS seems determined to make such endeavors an
effort in futility.
Good to hear from you Shaun. Is there still such a thing as BrainShare
or is that gone?
I still have a NW6.5 OES running as a fileserver that’s about it for
Novell which is
why I’m poking around at other solutions for files. Would like to run
Linux but just
don’t have a lot of confidence in SAMBA paired with MS Office products.
Would also
probably end up working with LDAP which I don’t really care for either.
Mostly it’s a
devil you know versus devil you don’t conundrum.
Posts in “chat” areas aren’t counted, only in product forums I’m afraid.
The captcha should go away after your account has been active for a few
days, or when you post in a product related forum.
Not too sure if that helps you?
Cheers,
