Hi all: Just a small rant, not here to debate who makes the best servers. I recenlty ordered a new DL380p Gen8, and today we went to put it in the rack only to discover it did not come with a cable management arm like ALL my other DL-series servers. Well, I come to find out that it is now an “accessory” to be purchased separately. So beware when ordering servers from HP and don’t assume what came with a server 3 months ago is still included. Bastards.

I quit using hp servers 2 years ago. I don’t think they are the company they
used to be.

I bought the same server a couple months ago and ran into the same
thing. I should’ve said something here and saved you some trouble.

Presumably you also bought the server with warranty so you’ll get BIOS
updates as they’re now optional too!

cmosentine sounds like they ‘said’:

So my response to cmosentine’s comment is…
Apparently they are going the way of pretty much everyone
else…anything for a buck.

Don’t worry, the NSA will give you those for free

I saw their announcement a few months back that they would be requiring a
maintenance agreement for firmware updates on server equipment (at least).
So, let me get this straight…You sold me something that was defective,
and I have to have a support contract to get it fixed? No thank you.
I’ll buy from someone who isn’t going to charge me to fix something that
should have been working when I bought it.

I’m in the same boat. I told my manager that we are not purchasing HP
server equipment anymore and that I will look elsewhere. We just had a
few things, but we are finally getting serious about replacing our aging
NetWare stuff so we will be making a sizable purchase within the next
calendar year.

This kind of thing is really widespread, and I think as consumers, we
need to let companies know that we really dislike this. I just flew on
Delta Airlines last week for family business, and I was amazed at how,
given the cost of the ticket (not really expensive, but not cheap,
either) they’ve shifted to charging for everything. I’m surprised they
haven’t put a card swipe on the restrooms.
Want legroom so you can actually sit down? That’ll cost you extra.
Something more than a couple cookies and half a can of Coke? Yeah,
that’ll cost you extra as well on any domestic flight - as much as it
would cost to buy it at the airport itself.
Want to check a bag? Cough up $50. Or take it to the gate and check it
for free because too many people have figured out that taking it to the
gate is the way to get to check it for free - and as full as the flights
are, they are ALWAYS looking for volunteers to check their bags.
If I wanted to be charged a-la-carte prices for things that used to be
included, I’d have flown a budget airline. I fly Delta so I don’t have
to deal with this kind of nonsense.
Except that now I do - and 90% of the passengers seem to be pre-board and
medallion members, so as someone who used to fly a lot but no longer
does, I get to board in the final 10% and I get the crappiest seats
available. It used to be that I could actually sit in a coach seat and
not have my knees in the kidneys of the people in front of me. That’s no
longer true, it seems, unless I’m willing to pay a premium for a seat
that has adequate legroom for my average-sized frame.

I hear you, I see it as well. Part of the reason we tend to build our
own servers here is so that we know what we are getting … nothing
extra. Spending money expecting service and then not receiving it is
worse.
As you said, it seems to be getting worse all around us.

Yes, HP is making it harder to buy HP equipment because all the Line
Items you need to know to get the system you expect. I think they did
it so they can have a low price listed (Like gas stations listing the
Gas price that is valid only if you are purchasing a car wash also).
It is confusing and time wasting to the customer.
I ran into problems also with the ILO, which now requires a purchase to
get functionality that came with the old servers. I think it is a bad
move by HP.

I would swear cisco owns them. That is the company that used to be the worst
for that. It is spreading it seems these days.

I would put any of the mobile carriers in the US up against Cisco or HP
for nickel-and-diming customers with hidden charges.
