“You can be expert in the mechanics of a typical corporate computer
network, and be baffled by the mysteries of Novell.”

One could say the same of Microsoft. These guys always gotta do a
little dig. Why can’t they simply report the news?

Because that’s no fun!

Actually I find it interesting that this story is STILL in the news, since the
original report of LAPD pulling out was from early October! I’m happy to see
that it keeps coming up over and over though I guess. I just wish so many
writers wouldn’t use “ancient GroupWise” or “legacy system” like they have a
clue what they are talking about. This one says Novell systems are rare and
arcane. Of course, we can’t comment because the site only allows for comments
from law enforcement.

sadly the retreat to GroupWise is only temporary until they get back to
the PD’s original intent which was to move to Exchange.

It’s also only LAPD, and not the City of LA… Just one business unit in
a very large organization.

More interesting to me is, “You can be expert in the mechanics of a
typical corporate computer network, and be baffled by the mysteries of
Novell.”

What’s confusing about Novell products? Relatively open standards? The
concept of a directory? What a ‘byte’ is?

Well, if I’m not mistaken, the LAPD is about 13000 users, and approximately HALF
of the entire City’s employees, so it’s not “just one business unit” overall.

Wasn’t it 30.000 users, of which 17.000 were moved to Google already,
and 13.000 still being on groupwise?

Yes, the 13000 are all LAPD to my knowledge. So less than half - but stil not a
“little business unit” by any means.

You should put in a proposal to upgrade their GW and let them compare
the cost/effort. You could use laying on the beach a couple of times a
year.

Do you work with Novell technologies at a university, college or school?
If so, your campus could benefit from joining the Novell Technology
Transfer Partner (TTP) program. See TTP Organization | Micro Focus for more details.
