PC weirdness

Have a user w/ an XP sp3 machine. He was doing some work on some stuff
on his C drive, created a few shortcuts on the desktop to them as it’s
many many shape files, etc.

Something caused the machine to generate hundreds of copies of these
shortcuts, filling up his entire desktop.

If he deletes them, they come back on a reboot.

Any ideas?

Are you sure the ones seen after a reboot are new ones and not old ones
just finally arranging themselves into the current view? Timestamps may
help confirm, or looking at the Desktop from the command line.

Good luck.

ab sounds like they ‘said’:

Timestamps may help confirm, or looking at the Desktop from the
command line.

So my response to ab’s comment is…

Was vnc’d to his machine, he showed me all the shortcuts (he had moved
them to a desktop folder). I deleted them from said folder and we
rebooted his machine. When it came back up, they were all on the
desktop again.

Shortcuts are just files.

So enable procmon for run on boot, reboot, open, and see what created
them.

Is there a shortcut inside a shortcut that links back to itself?
