Anyone have an idea what to do with ‘Microsoft System Update Readiness Tool’
that downloads as a .bin file? Cannot open it or run it with anything and
as usual MS has nothing but nebulous instructions for using it.

Downloads as a .msu here, and can readily be doubleclicked in explorer.

Seems as though I can rename it to .msu and it works…again…b0rked
software.
It’s a ploy by the software industry to keep IT people
employeed…kind of like the state of Oregon making it against the law
to pump your own gas. They do stuff like this so untrained people
can’t deal with it and they have to hire IT people. It keeps all my
friends employed.

Interestingly, keeping unemployment down is one reason cited for the law
in Oregon. I didn’t know that. (It’s not the only reason, but it’s one
of many). I’ve also observed that in New Jersey.

stations existed. Of course I was 5 then.

Except that is so b0rked these days even IT folks can’t repair
this garbage. Oh I can, it’s called reinstall Windows. I just
love it when that became the ‘solution’ to everything.
FWIW I have a Win7 laptop that has a hosed update mechanism.

Oh, and occasionally I like to actually USE a computer rather than fix
it before I can use it. Last night spent 3 hours fixing my daughters iPad
that refused to synch properly. But I’m not bittter.

Nope, there are a few others, including (I was a little surprised to see,
actually) that gasoline+water=slippery, and Oregon gets lots of rain.
But the bottom line is “tradition” - it’s the way they’ve done it for a
long time, and even with voter referendums, the voters like it that way.
They don’t have to get out of their cars in the rain to fill the tank.

I tried to get a job at a petrol station. Apparently I wasn’t good
enough for even a second interview/return call - now I have to slum it
in IT
