I ran this command this morning,

mv ../*.Z

instead of

mv ../*.Z .

One of my .Z files disappeared?? Any idea where it went?

To the second (or last) file that matched the wildcard pattern.

Time to restore from backup, most likely. The system did exactly what
you told it to do, but what you told it to do and what you wanted it to
do were two different things.
