Stupid Windows 10

I think it might be the latest Insider build, but I can’t complete the
download of anything that needs SSL, without getting a network error.
I’ve completely removed my antivirus, I’ve tried a different NIC, I
think I’m going to have to go back to square one and reinstall, unless
anyone’s got any ideas…

So reinstalling shouldn’t be a big deal, right?..

Malcolmlewis,

I don’t have any issues accessing https sites, just downloading files:
I see tls 1.2 alerts in wireshark but of course they’re encrypted…

Kgroneman,

if it wasn’t my secondary machine, sure ;0 Putting base windows on is
not trouble - but reinstalling my games is a pain given the number of
activation codes…

So my response to Shaun’s comment is…

You have the dns cache service enabled? We ran into weird issues
(mainly with edge though) that didn’t work right with the dns cache
disabled.

Stevo

Stevo,

yep, enabled…

Stevo,

what happens is that files start to download, but fail partway through

  • my feeling is that there’s a TLS problem when it tries to update the
    encryption…

Shaun,

it appears to be right at the end, maybe when the connection is closed?
there’s no problem in safe mode…

So my response to Shaun’s comment is…

Weird, we have a similar problem when trying to ftp from one particular
site. All other sites work fine and we can ftp from this site from
outside our firewall.

Wonder if the checksum is causing some error or something.

Sounds like some third party *networking related( software is interfering…

Massimo,

I’d suspected Kaspersky, but I’ve removed it, used their cleanup
utility, then went through the registry, cleaning out “kaspersky”

Massimo,

I disabled ZESM, no difference - not a silly suggestion though!
You’ve probably dabbled in this part of the registry more than I have,
where should I take a look?

I think a bucket or two of sheep food, several truck loads of
grasshopper food, a boatload of windoze 10 installation disks and at
least a pint to two of a beverage that you start spelling with the
letter “G” would improve the process.

wash, rinse repeat

Been a long time! How you doing?

Yep, Windows 10 is a pain. Fortunately still running 7 at work. But
I have one 10 box at home that I use occasionally to try to get
familiar with it. Don’t like it though.
