SLED 11 SP2 and HP Deskjet All-in-One Deskjet 1050 (scanner)

I have recently installed a PC for a friend, using SLED 11 SP2.

Installation went fine, but the scanner is not recongnized by the system.

The model is HP Deskjet 1050 AIO. The printer does work, but the scanner failed to be recognized by yaST.

According to HP, it should work :
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_1050_j410_series.html

When I use YaST->Hardware->Scanner, the model is detected, but not configured. When I try the button “Modify”, I get a YaST error (widget failed for button Modify). Then the scanner model is not listed, I try the HP AIO generic model, but it does not work.

I found also that yaST window sometimes crash while attempting to add/modify a scanner. May be someone could reproduce it by switching the system in French, and try to add/modify a scanner.

Any Idea to solve this issue ?

Arnaud

Hi
You need to run the command hp-setup, there should also be in the
startup applications (under control-center) the “HP System Tray Service”

All user control of scanning, printing etc runs from here.

Hi Malcom,

I will try this next week as I don’t have this computer at home. However, it does not help on YaST crash and warning messages. Is it possible to try to reproduce this behavior (SLED 11 SP2 + updates, French GUI, Yast->Scanner : Add/Modify a scanner)

Also, I found that HPLIP 3.11.1 is necessary to make this scanner working on Linux. Which version is provided with SLED 11 SP2 ?

Strangely, it works now. May be the PC had to be rebooted or the printer switched off.
So Scan+Printer are ok on SLED 11 SP2.

Another question on bahalf of this person :

  • Most DVD movies don’t work due to right restrictions. Fluendo codecs apart, which is the easiest way to add codecs support ? This person comes from Windows so command-line solution is not necessary a good option
  • My neighbor bought a 1-year basic support subscription. How can he contact a support in French ? Tel Number ? Contact ? There seems to be no French SLED Forum around. He neither speak nor understand english.

Arnaud

Hi
Possibly the reboot kicked hplip into life…

From my SUSE contact;

The user can always post here in french and will try to translate, plus
we have a french forum on the openSUSE side and I’m sure I can invite
one of the users here to translate…
